iPod Touch wont play when connected to dock connector

Hi I have a special cable in my car stereo which connects from an iPods dock connector directly into the deck. It doesn't charge while it is connect but it could if I just wire up the power behind the deck. I have an iPod Nano and it works like a charm when connected to the ipod cable. Now my new touch wont play over the same cable. Is there a setting I am missing?? or will it not detect the cable unless it also charges the battery?
