iPod iPod Video questions

Hey everyone, as my music library grows past 10GB and my phones available space goes below 2GB I figure it is time to future-proof my music library and free up some much needed space on my phone.

I have been looking into the 30GB iPod video and I have a few questions:

1. How reliable is the hard drive in it? If I buy it used while its working great, how likely is it that the drive will fail the next day? Considering its been several years since these things were new

2. What is a good price to purchase one for? I don't really want to exceed paying $50-60 and i'm wondering if this is realistic?

1) I sold mine in 2010, there were no problems with the hard drive then. It's not so much the hard drive, but it's the battery that will be more of an issue. The 1.8" drive is easily replaceable, however, it isn't a standard anymore, so just watch out if you do plan on buying a replacement, because they have been sitting around in warehouses for awhile. That will cost you another $50 though.

2) I got $50 something for mine on eBay. I think they might be less now. Of course, this is with wear and tear.

I'll second Jessicas opinion! You'll not future proof your collection with that old device.

But it's retro cool!! I use my first generation every day. Again, like Jessica says, it's the battery that's the problem, not the harddrive!

If only the 7th generation wasn't so expensive :-(


Thanks for everybody's advice. It appears I'll have to either save up or start micro-managing my phone.

+ I used the term future-proof because of the space and because the 30-pin connector would be extremely useful to me in the future.

I have a hard time managing my music too. I pay like $25 a year to keep it on Amazon's servers with my other Amazon MP3 purchases. It's not for everyone, but it works for me and keeps my music off my phone. I use the Nano for my most, most favorite stuff, and my shuffle for remixes.

I finally got all my 24597 songs on to iTunes Match. I still use my Classic though with a complete copy of those songs and also on my Mac too. You should look in to the 160GB model, the hard drive should be fine as long as you do not take it running or anything like that (I learnt this the hard way!).
