iPod iPod wont work on PC

My friend's iPod wont work on her PC and she asked me for help but I haven't got a clue so here is what she told me.

*and the computer has suddenly decided
*that it's not installed anymore or something
*and now,
*I plug it in,
*and it says 'Files needed' and like you need a disk D:
*there is no disk that comes with an iPod!
*so then I click browse and hopelessly look around
*and nothing
