My iPod Classic (5th gen) works when it is plugged into my Macbook, but will not work when it is disconnected. The screen lights up and shows the main menu, but the rotating dial used to select what I want does NOT move at all... Unless plugged into the computer. Why is it doing this?

I'd guess battery issue. How old is it? Anything battery powered that runs fine only when charging is a likely old/dead battery. The batteries have a limited number of charge cycles.
