In February I got a iPP 64G. It was a budget decision and limited knowledge about iPads. It turns out, storage in tight, not much left and therefore I am debating to either upgrade to a 256G model or use an external storage option.
I actually have no idea how to move my picture library onto a memory stick and use it between my Mac and my iPad. I have the whole library in iCloud, but it turns out with all the projects and apps I am juggling to edit projects and manage them, my iPad has not enough internal space.
I am not sure how to sell a iPad on the internet to finance the new one. I am also not convinced I will gain much by buying the 2020 version except for the storage.
Does anyone have ideas to use external storage for picture/video editing? Does LumaFusion offer any support? How do I manage my picture Library and do not break the sync with my iMac?

Thanks

External storage support on iPad is extremely sketchy at best. Do not rely on external storage for your production needs. Upgrade to a 256 GB model would make life a whole lot easier. I once regretted me not going for 512 GB, budget decision like you. Now I am stuck with it, thankfully I don’t do any production work so mostly fine.

Do not use external storage with an iPad like that. Getting a 1TB iPad Pro is more preferred.

The problem you will run into with picture and video editing & external storage is that the pictures and videos have to be copied onto the iPad into the memory space of the app you're using - you can't directly edit from the storage itself. If you have a 2018 iPad Pro, it should have a USB-C connection and a drive with a USB-C connection (or a hub), you can use it -

It is the typical scenario of “buy cheap, buy twice” that doesn’t just happen to you.

I’d plan on either trading in your iPad or selling it to a private person and then getting one with more suitable storage.

Yes, I get it, but cheap in regards to the iPP is relative. While I have no complaints about the 2018 iPP power and capability, it strikes me that Apple is actually labeling it a pro device knowing it won’t fulfill pro requirements. As said, this is my first iPad since ages and my use case developed since I got it in February. I have used Samsung tablets before and never worried about storage. Therefore it was a item I just under estimated.

Selling to private person: got burned a few years ago when selling a surface on eBay. The buyer played around with it for a few weeks and decided to return. Ebay was all over me when I disputed and I got finally banned from selling on eBay. I ended up with a spare surface.
Trade in: recently get an iMac and traded my 2016 MacBook Pro. After the return period for the iMac expired, the apple trade in partner decided my screen was defective and reduced the value significantly. Had it shipped back and the screen was in excellent condition. Now I have a MacBook Pro hanging around in the shelves.

That’s why I was curious of the USB-C connection could be of any use for my work. The iMac already cost me a arm and a leg and business is not that great these days. Spending another 1000$ on a iPad is just not ... anyway. I’ll adjust my workflow I guess. Just have to figure out how.

This happened to me when I first got the iPad 2. Bought the 32GB as middle ground and managed to fill up the device the same weekend I got it. Ended up giving that to my mom and bought a 64GB for myself.

This video may help.

The YouTuber uses a Samsung T5 drive to hold the media and photos he uses for video / photo editing. There is no getting around having to import them to your iPad when you want to work on them, meaning you will probably only be able to work on 1-2 projects at any one time.

Definitely sucks but I believe that iOS has been developed to sandbox app data on internal storage to improve security, so it isn't well equipped to allow universal use of external storage in the same way MacOS or other desktop operating systems are. Users need to account for storage needs and consider workflow limitations to determine their storage requirements at the time of iPad purchase. Hopefully the limitations change in the future but we're not there yet.

Thank you. That is helpful.
