Is 10.7 the last of OS X?

Since OS X versions are named after big cats, I can't think of a more marvelous cat than a Lion. Maybe the next one will be 10.8 Sabertooth? But I personally think 10.7 will end the OS X series.

With that being said, I'm left in even more confusion. What will the new Mac OS be called after OS X? will it be called OS XI or OS 11? Neither of those sound or look very elegant at a glance.

What do you think?
 
I personally think that OS X will be like Windows... it will always be called OS X like it will always be called Windows... They might shift from cat names to other things... But we still have to get through 10.7, 10.8, 10.9 and Finally OS X (10) so thats what almost 6 to 8 years of Operating systems?!

But my opinion, Apple doesn't have to change to Mac OS 11 just so that they can change the naming scheme of their OS, and I still fully believe that Liger could be another possibility since Lion's UI is being inspired by iOS, I think Liger could be Mac OS and iOS being even more unified together.

Also, Snow Leopard was an awesome name since it was just an upgrade from Leopard and nothing else to dramatic (mostly under the hood changes) so the name fit, but if you look at the past OS's, Apple hasn't been ranking these cats from least to greatest of how they rank in the wild. As someone pointed out in the link above, Apple has also trademarked Lynx and Cougar, so again, I don't think Apple is done with Mac OS X just yet.

Good point. They had panther and tiger before snow leopard, which doesn't really make too much sense. But i have to disagree with you there, about the whole "Liger" thing. I think people would just take that as a joke or a Napoleon Dynamite reference and it would receive loads of criticism and lack in sales.

Sorry that i posted an existing topic, but, unlike some other users, I don't forum search before i post every thread. And i seldomly use the forums anyway.
 
I think they will switch to Mac OS 11 someday. It will be a major overhaul but still be based on NeXTSTEP from 1989. With windows, files, and be based on Unix.

Maybe Mac OS 11.0 will be touch based, i don't know.

That doesn't make any sense. Since Leopard, Mac OS X is a certified Unix OS.
 
They might shift from cats to something else, but I think what's more possible is just calling it iOS. There's iOS for iPad, and iOS for iPhone, they're not at all the same, but they still have the same name. iOS is based on OS X apparently (don't see how), so there is supposed to be a relationship.

Then there will be iOS for iPhone, iOS for iPad, iOS for Apple TV and iOS for Mac. There will be differences between them, but that isn't a problem.

The same way there's Windows Phone 7. Although the phone isn't running Windows 7, everyone knows that.

Underneath the UI layer, OS X and iOS are virtually identical (within the limits of mobile vs desktop hardware). iOS is basically mobile OS X.

That's not how version numbers work. We went from iOS 1.1.5 to 2.0, 2.2.1 to 3.0, and 3.2.2 to 4.0.
 
Should have saved Tiger for last since they're the baddest cats of all. They still have Tion, Liger, and several others. Maybe they'll just go to random animals after they run out of cats. OS X 10.15 Badger, or OS X 10.17 Beaver

Who says they need to stop then? It's not a maths lesson.

10.11, 10.12 etc.

10.4 had 11 software updates, taking it to 10.4.11.

Apple are spending a hell of a lot of their resources on the iPhone and iPad, it wouldn't appear they actually have the resources to go about creating an OS X successor any time soon. They've poached off most of their OS X software engineers to work on iOS. There's literally about a handful of people working on Lion right now, they are going to need a lot more than that to create a next gen OS. New interface, new foundation, new API's, new everything.

Besides, whilst OS X development has staled a bit, it's still a solid foundation for a while. They've got at least, I'd say until 2016 before they even need to think about an OS X successor. Don't quote me on that though, no one can predict things like this. One day out of the blue, someone will come out with something that just about changes everything. The Mac and the iPhone to name two. No one saw them coming.
 
I don't think it is really that important to worry about OS XI or if 10.7 is the last update of the OS X series. It will come whenever it'll come.

When it comes to the OS development, we're talking about a time scale of decades, not years. OS X still have a lot of improvements left for another decade to go. Jobs mentioned that in the past as well. We're talking about 20-30 years of OS X being around.

Snow Leopard had the most of the foundations refined for the next decade worth of innovations and Lion so far is proving to be a great first "post SL" update.

My honest opinion is that Lion is what Apple have perceived for 10.6, but the time it would take to develop it would take too long, so they split it into two parts. Snow Leopard for the back-end, Lion for the front-end. Imagine what a major update that Lion would've been if they didn't release Snow Leopard two years ago. It'd probably be the biggest OS release in their history.

I think Apple is doing a good job so far despite the limited small resources they have on the iOS/Mac OS X development.
