I'm thinking about the iPhone and whether it's like going with Windows Vista... is it better to wait till the service pack comes out, ie 2nd gen with 3G?

Actually... that's exactly what people should do... send a message to Apple that you're not going to take inferior technology just so Apple can hedge and have something to release for next years product updates...

I wouldn't have thought so, other than 3G which will probably be added to a later model.

By inferior technology are you just refering to 3G? Because I was under the impression that the iPhone was something of a technological masterpiece.

Actually... nah, you're bogus. Have fun with your Treo.

So they're both products that will be updated some time after their release. My god, the coincidence is stunning. Hey, you know what else is like Vista in that respect? iPods. And Mac OS X. And Windows 95. And Adobe Lightroom.

Thanks for playing. Go run some PowerPoint on your Treo now.

The 3G is one of the things really holding me back from getting an iPhone right now. I'm still in a Sprint(who seems to have the best mobile internet right now) contract, so I'm thinking of getting a Treo just to hold me over until a 3G iPhone comes out, but I'm moving soon, so I'll probably just wait and see how WiFi coverage is there.

It's plainly obvious that the ONLY reason Apple did not include 3G capabilities when even "the lowly Palm Treo" has it... is to milk their customers, get them to buy the first gen... then release a 3G version next year that will surf even faster and let you stream video from your itunes library... oooh... you can do that with a Palm Treo already...

Oh well... I will withhold final judgment until I touch the iPhone but I can't imagine anyone except "the sheep" buying into this 'inferior' technology... and yes, I'm talking about 3G vs. Edge... by the way... 4G is already on the horizon...

Cliff.

how much 3G coverage is there in the US anyway?

Um, troll. Both comments you've made in this thread are pure flamebait.

Not a troll... devil's advocate maybe... convince me how a phone that is slower at surfing the Internet is better than one that is faster...

That's all... and yes, I do think the iPhone is intriguing... but I think consumers are being suckered at the expense of the shareholders.

3G is well represented in major population centers in the US. Here's a link to the Cingular Edge coverage. There is a popup list of cities supporting 3G (a 3G phone will degrade to Edge if no 3G service is available):

Come to think of it... my argument about milking the customers is correct... I mean, Apple charged $2 just to turn on wireless-n coverage that was already built into their product line... ouch... I hate being right :)

Not a ton, but a lot more than Apple would lead you to believe. The problem is, AT&T's network has very little 3G. For example, in the Denver area, AT&T has no 3G, but other providers like Helio do have 3G coverage.

As I remember it them charging $2 to activate n was required by law (possibly Sarbanes-Oxley but don't quote me on that).

actually, the treo's are more like vista (really, like microsoft in general)- with all of the crashes that they can't seem to work out.. It's a shame because I really love the darn thing when it's working- which isn't very often these days.. I'm on my third one and they've all had the same stability issues.. I'll just suffer through with this one until June 29th..

Well the real problem is that Apple is just so far behind the times. just absolutely no new ideas coming from them. Now the Treo theres a phone,

Maybe the treo isn't working because you added software to it (at least you have the option of adding software)... I know fresh out of the box they work flawlessly.

I wonder... perhaps the 3G capabilities are actually built into the iPhone but not enabled... then it's just a matter of charging for the enabling of the feature... and they can use the Sarbanes Oxley excuse again...

Anyway, time will tell... I'm done ranting...

What has Apple really introduced that isn't a variation of something else that's already in the market... mp3 players existed before the iPod... touchscreen phones existed before the iPhone... geniuses existed before Mac Geniuses :)

I am on my 5th Trep 700p in 1 year. I _thought_ it might have been a problem with 3rd party software ... not the case. I haven't had any 3rd party software on it since my 2nd Treo.

It works well, with no data. Soon as you start to put data on it, it cripples.

Yes, plainly obvious that would be the ONLY reason.

God, people and their 'Don't get Rev A' bullcrap. I am STILL using my 'Rev A' 17" Powerbook with no problems thank you very much.

I'm getting the 1G iPhone, and if a new kickass iPhone comes out, then I'll sell it and get that one.

obviously trolling...

Yeah - flawlessly - that's why the cingular rep was apologizing for the one I returned as they refunded my money on the Treo I bought and was using with no mods. - If you are happy with your Treo - keep using it, not like it was anything new/original either - just an attempt at a better merging of existing functionality.

If you read MR - you might have seen the story about :apple: announcing that they are going to claim income from iPhone over a period of time allowing them to provide upgrades without charging for new functionality... but I don't think you are much of a reader... Just a Treo fan... upset about the hype around the iPhone.

Nope- no software added.. On the 1st one I had I figured it would be a stable operating system, so yes, i added software.. I then deleted everything and figured I'd add the software a peice at a time until I found the culprit- no go- it was the operating system..

The next two I just waited to see if they were stable "out of the box" before I added anything- no go again- crash city almost immediately.. One had a sim card issue that was the main culprit, and the current one appears to be a versamail issue- who knows, all I know is that I've got it to the point where it is almost useable so I can live w/ it till June 29th..

They really are NOT "flawless fresh out of the box"- I've been on every treo based forum on the internet trying to work this stability issue out, and it is a very well known, and wide spread issue..Some of the palm updates have helped, but they are far from "flawless out of the box"..

I don't really care about wirelessly surfing the net away from an open wifi connection. I just want a good phone with a good OS. The tunes and basic camera are just extras. Verizon didn't want to deal, so they're going with Cingular/AT&T with the 2.5G or whatever. Plenty of people will buy the first gen, probably more than they can make. Because our current cell phones suck, and the iPhone doesn't. As anyone who's seen them can attest. I'd rather be a sucker enjoying his iPhone for 6 months or whatever while you wait so you can get slightly faster internet most of us will never use.

And yeah, you do come off as a troll. Start with a general statement, then make a criticism that would otherwise be valid, but made in such a way as to just be inflammatory. Either that or you're just myopic enough to think everyone must feel the same way about this. We don't.

P.S. The Treo doesn't come anywhere close to how cool the iPhone is.
