I ask because the 24 inch previous generation Imacs seem to be about as large as I can go in my setup, but I'm very interested in the new machines!

This is one of those posts that I truly appreciate.

If someone would be so kind, could you please post a picture comparison of the 27" monitor versus the 30" Apple ACD? (in terms of size)

so the 27" is closer to the 24" in size (except for width of course) than 30"

good thing

it makes the 27" less enormous than the impression given by the number
 
30" ACD is still the king then! Interestingly though, the pixel density is going to be totally different on the new iMacs. The 27" has the same horizontal pixel length as the 30", but is physically smaller.
