I ask because the 24 inch previous generation Imacs seem to be about as large as I can go in my setup, but I'm very interested in the new machines!

Is 27 inch 16:9 notably bigger than 24 inch 16:10?

27" 16:9 is a bit wider than 27" 16:10
So you can measure 3 more diagonal inches from your 24" and add a bit of width.

so the 27" is closer to the 24" in size (except for width of course) than 30"

30" ACD is still the king then! Interestingly though, the pixel density is going to be totally different on the new iMacs. The 27" has the same horizontal pixel length as the 30", but is physically smaller.
