I live in an area with mostly EDGE only.

With my 3GS since June I have "no service," most of the time. When I pop the sim back into old 3G phone, signal is fine!

In a big city, the 3GS is fine as well.

Did Apple purposely make the signal worst in non-3G areas, or might there be something wrong with my 3GS?

I mean this is a night and day difference.

Many thanks.

If you're getting no service on 3GS but "fine signal" when you pop the sim back into your 3G phone, assuming that you're in the same area... It would probably be your phone that's the problem.

Thanks. That is exactly what I'm experiencing.

It just seems odd that the 3GS does ok in the big cities.
