i live and work in bright environments. anything less than 100% brightness is difficult to see. today i killed my ipad pro 12.9 battery in a little over 4 hours, just using the timer for my workout, and a little light duty web surfing. is this normal? anyone else use this thing during the day? it also gets pretty warm. im wondering if mine is defective. i get roughly 8-9 just surfing at night on lower light levels.

this is a little frustrating, especially since it takes roughly 5 hours to charge this thing.

thanks for any input

I do web browsing Netflix YouTube all on wifi at 100% bringthness amd get 9 hours easy heck it takes my iPad about 30 minutes each 5% of battery life
A few key things for max battery

Just my superstitions

Never restore an IPad from and iPhone back up it brings a lot of junk
Turn off rotation and Parralax effect.
In my case Turn off Celluar LTE
Lastly I only use and transmit 5Ghz 802.11 AC from my Home router I believe 5Ghz 802.11 AC is more efficient not doubt faster and since 2.4Ghz is not even transmitted devices only have 1 choice and may likely save power.

Some just are we are within 14 to 30 days return only no repairs. Just buy another one.

Parralax effect is that cool effect that tilts the icons when you tilt the tablet giving the illusion you can look behind them. Totally useless and drains the battery because it's extra work the CPU and Graphics have to do.

wow if thats the case with the warranty i doubt ill by another apple product.
[doublepost=1460065964][/doublepost]had mine since launch

Your not going to get a warranty swap so if you feel you need to return it do it before the trial period ends.

Battery tests are carried out by Apple at 50% brightness not 100%

On the 12.9 inch, if you run it a 100% and use the pencil constantly then you're looking at 4 hrs battery.

i was not using the pencil in today's use case. only surfing the web and and using the timer. thanks for the feedback.

i think ill try to replicate the apple test they have on their website. im a nerd, this will be fun. anyone have any tips for doing this test? 50% brightness, no auto brightness, wifi on while watching a movie on a repeating loop is the specs on the apple website. if i run the battery out, when i plug it back in will the battery app show the stats of the test run?

Did you get Apple Care?
There is a certain acceptable tolerance level Apple has for their devices based on battery. If your battery is bad, they will replace it, but will make you go through some hoops first.
  • They will look at your device log, especially for battery draining apps.
  • They may ask you to try to run it all the way down, then charge back up and see how it runs for a few days.
  • They will ask you to back-up, wipe, and restore.
  • They will run a battery test.
  • If the battery fails all of that, and it's below the standard, they will either replace the device or replace the battery (has to be sent back to Apple)
Don't just 'live with' a defective battery, but make sure you don't have anything that's draining it faster than it should (look at what apps are using power). Apple is stubborn (and somewhat rightly so) when it comes to replacing a battery, but if it is bad, and you're persistent (yet polite) Apple will replace it.

If you have Apple Care the process is somewhat easier.

Not normal, you wifi signal seems really bad, so could be constantly searching for signal.

that could be a factor, ill run more test next to my MIFI. i dont have WIFI where i live. there is no internet exept cellular rip off data plans. thanks!

unfortunately i do not have apple care. i have turned off all non critical back ground apps. but i do need google hangouts, i use my ipad as my primary communication device.

thanks for all the bullet points. this gives me some ideas to try.

Battery has been great on my 9.7". Been using it a lot today: 10 hours 45 minutes of use, mainly web browsing, listening to podcasts, email, and taking notes with the Pencil and Smart Keyboard, and still have 22% battery left.

The thing that has killed both my phone and my tablet the most has been poor wifi or cell service. The constant searching for a connection eats battery life like hell.

That battery life seems about right. Try using it with auto brightness. They rate the iPad 10 hours on 50% brightness.

Good news, I ran a looping video test overnight, using the information on apples website on battery life testing. I got 10 hours at 50% brightness. Just like it's supposed to be.

The bad news is you will only get 4 hours if you are in a bright environment like me. My house has southern exposure and lots of Windows. I run auto brightness and I'm still only getting roughly 4 hours. Obviously some of you are exaggerating about your new toys Getting 10 hours on max brightness.

Use a matte screen protector? Also if you bought recently and you are within 14 days have a look at 9.7 pro, apparently much less reflective and brighter.

this is a massive factor. I've had an iPhone 4-S (in previous years) drain from 100% to 15% doing basically nothing at work by lunch-time due to poor cell service. Normally it would get 1.5-2 days from 100% to empty.

Searching for a better tower takes a lot of power and if you're in a bad location or there's a service problem where you are then this can be a huge drain.

I do not care how bright it is inside your house, there is something else going on if you can not see your device at less that 100% screen brightness.

How many bars is a weak signal for example?

i had a matte protector for a while, but i removed it. i picked up my pro upon launch. 9.7 is a bit small for me, i like large tablets. i do look forward to seeing the new screen in the pro 2, but i doubt its magically that much better.

uh no, i live in california, with southern exposure in my office and half my house is a sun room greenhouse. there is nothing wrong with my pro screen. take your pro outside on a sunny day. 100% is still hard to see in direct sunlight. a small screen cannot overpower the sun.

Well then there is a price to pay for living in a greenhouse and you need not expect much better at 100% brightness.
