I have read that it brought some new bugs and Safari now crashes quite a bit. How is battery life, improved at all?

I would need to make a virtual machine and install windows so wondering if it's really worth the extra hassle.

No problems for me, iPhone and ipad. ipad us actually much better. Multitasking gestures used to quit working all the time, now only once in a while:D.

Battery is better for my 6+ and no Safari crashes at all. Those issues sound more like the ones reported for 8.1.1

I'm unable to send iMessages. Anyone else reporting this?

Nope. Try the logging out method for iMessage a few times and reboot. If it worked before, it could either be a tweak or just restore and see if it fixes it. As much as no one likes restoring, 8.1.1 is still being signed so this is the time to do restores to see if it fixes it
