Is 87W USB-C power adapter good for MacBook Pro 16" 2021?

I am getting my new MacBook Pro 16" 2021 in May 2022. Also, I will have extra 140W USB-C Power Adapter and USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable for my new computer, so I will have total 2 140W USB-C Power Adapters and 2 USB-C to MagSafe 3 cables.

Should I use my dad's MacBook Pro 15" 2018 charger to charge my new MacBook Pro 16" 2021?

My new MacBook Pro 16" 2021 has Apple M1 Max.

My dad's MacBook Pro 15" 2018 charger is equipped with USB-C to USB-C cable and 87W USB-C Power Adapter.

I used my own charger and my dad's MacBook Pro 15" 2018 charger to charge my current MacBook Pro 15" 2016.

Is 87W USB-C power adapter good for MacBook Pro 16" 2021? Maybe you can use Apple 87W USB-C Power Adapter to charge your Apple M1 Max-based MacBook Pro 16" 2021 (Not 2019 Intel model) for testing?

How long time to fully charge Apple M1 Max-based MacBook Pro 16" 2021 and Apple M1 Pro-based MacBook Pro 16" 2021 with just Apple 87W USB-C Power Adapter?

do you need fast charging? are you gonna do heavy stuff on your computer for long periods of time? if not then you can charge it with 20W charger, its just gonna take ages, MBP doesnt give a crap, juice is juice for it, doesnt matter where it is from
sometimes I charge my MBP with 15W samsung phone charger and it shows like 8 hours to charge from 50% to 80% while using it

It will still charge, just slightly slower. If you’re doing intensive tasks, then it might drain battery while plugged in.

I will use the supplied charger that my new MBP comes with for my room use and intensive tasks.

Without intensive tasks, I can use my dad’s MacBook Pro 15” 2018 charger to charge my new MBP without having to take my new charger from my room.

Seems to work just fine. I have two 2019 MBP 16's here that I thought both came with & required 90w chargers, but after looking a bit more carefully, the 5500m models brick in fact says it's an 87w.

^^This^^ is what I want to know. If am am charging my 16” MBP with it turned off, would it be better to charge the battery with like the 87 watt charger vs the 140 watt charger? I know it would charge slower but it would also reduce heat and I am in no hurry as it has the whole night to charge.

I'm not sure about M1 Max, but I am charging my MacBook Pro M1 Pro over a 18w DP USB-C, it charges as long I am not stressing my CPU usage, and it takes about 6-8 hours to reach 100%.

You can still charge with any smaller GaN power adapter >30w easily. As soon you stress your CPU, it will start sipping your battery usage as well with the power adapter.

of course it negatively impact battery, its added stress with fast charge, you may not notice it in a year, but give it a couple and your battery will be in worse shape compared to "slow charged" battery

Yes, it'll work. No, it won't harm your machine. It'll charge more slowly, but since you mentioned in another post that you're just leaving it alone while it charges, the loss of speed won't really make a difference (I'm guessing maybe an hour slower when charging from empty to full).

I have extra 140W chargers on order. Good to know that I can use my 87w charger in the meantime as a second charger.
