I just bought my first iPad, 10.2 128gb. I love it but I've been hearing it's actually getting replaced soon? I thought it would be September. If a new one is getting released soon, should I return it? I've got 2 weeks to do it.

Yeah that just came out in September of 2020. No way it's getting replaced within 6 months. All the rumors are for the iPad Pro, which is the higher end iPad that starts at $799.

There were some rumors pointing to early this year, but I feel like it'll be released later this year.

There is a rumored April event but not sure what products will be showcased during that event.

No chance the 9th gen iPad will get released at the April event, it’ll be at the end of the year.

even if it does not get replaced in April it most likely will in September / October

I have been wanting to upgrade my 2017 iPad for quite some time now and I am standing by for that rumoured "iPad air 3rd gen design language" refresh of the base iPad ...

I was hoping for a spring refresh, but if I have to wait another 6 months so be it. I think the wait will be worth the while

In the meantime, I continue to use my 2017 iPad and just wait it out

For you, things are a little different. You just bought your first iPad and if you need it now, enjoy what you got.

If you do not need it, return it and wait for the upcoming refresh (I expect to be nice in terms of design, not so much performance-wise)

do not get too confused by the refresh hype: the base iPad has been refreshed on a yearly basis since 2017, so ... buy what you need when you need it

Absolutely. The 8th gen has only been out 6 month.
What if Apple were to do something like what they did with the iPad 3 being replaced by the iPad 4 after only a couple of months?

Can’t see them doing that again, they pissed off a lot of customers when they did that, me included ?‍♂️?

I’d even be surprised to see a refresh later this year. What chip would it have? A14? That seems too fast for the regular iPad to adopt such a new processor. Who knows with Apple, though. Many doubted that the Air 4 would get the A14 chip, and they were proven wrong.

I can imagine ...

on the other hand, the last iPad was not a real refresh, it just got the A12, nothing else changed

the chip is rumoured to stay the same, just the externals might be refreshed by recycling the iPad Air 3rd gen design language

some hope for 64 gb base storage

That used to be par for the course for iPhone S releases. Besides, I think that's still better than the 2020 iPad Pro (albeit the higher base storage and 6GB RAM across the board are quite welcome changes). The A10 still performs okay but it's getting a bit long in the tooth.

I seriously doubt much is going to change if it’s updated in September. The difference from the current 10.2” retooled iPad Air 1st Gen chassis to the 3rd Gen Air chassis would be a bump to a 10.5” screen, a laminated display and slightly thinner overall. A12 was the first processor bump the new base model iPads have received since they were introduced in March 2018, so I doubt it’ll be replaced.

Apple has also notoriously had horrible ‘white spot’ screen issues on the 10.5” iPad displays. Considering both the iPad Pro 10.5” and iPad Air 3rd Gen suffered from this - and refurb units still do - I would be saddened if they move to that flawed design. Personally I would just pick up the current model on sale. A family member got an 8th Gen 128GB at Costco a couple months ago for $399. I thought it was an excellent deal to replace their iPad Air 2.

They have been updating the entry level every year, so it will come, but not now, very likely after the summer. It should keep the A12, and update the screen (possibly to a laminated 10.5). Next year it will keep the same chassis and move to A14...
Having said that, knowing Apple, I wouldn't be suprised if they keep the 10.2 size but make it laminated, in order not to make a new Air 3, even if it costs them a bit more
