Have a Late 2012 27 " iMac 32GB 750 GB SSD 2 GB graphics i7
Have been thinking of upgrading to the 2020 iMac but worry how long it will be supported with the intel chip?
Main use is LR/PS/FCPX
I'm guessing the OS should be OK for a few years unless a new OS is M1 chip only?

Sounds like you are not urgently needing a new computer, just thinking about it. If you've been satisfied with the 2012 iMac for this long, then you'll probably be using your next computer for a similar length of time. Given this, personally I suggest waiting a couple of months to see what the next announcements bring.

I'm using a 2014 iMac myself and it is still working well. I'm very interested in seeing the next iMac . . .

Thank you.
I guess not urgent, but may be getting that way, was doing some colour grading a couple of nights ago, and the fan went crazy loud, Ive got the fan going before but not that loud or fast
My first suspicion was dust, getting a clean on Monday to check
I guess the new iMac may be nice but I hear no access for ram

Let's wait and see. Ram upgrades have been possible for users of the 27" iMac for quite a few years now. The new Apple silicon does seem to be less dependent on RAM, for reasons that go beyond my own understanding of how these computers work.

And interestingly enough, just today and since your original post we've had encouraging news regarding new iMac plus even a separate display, said to be coming in 2021.

I have dust inside my iMac too, have done what I can by simply vacuuming (carefully) the vents.

With respect to the fan speeding up - if you don't have the free app Macs Fan Control, I recommend getting it. Gives you an easy way to observe internal temperatures as well as fan speed. I installed it recently after some discussion here on these forums, and based upon the recommendations of others here.

Thank you!
Might take this old timer a little to learn but I'm sure I'll get there
Hope to give it another run on FCPX colour grading today
