I am sure this answer is already out there I just can't find it. Maybe someone can give me a quick answer so I can end my search.

I have a Mac Pro single Quad Core 2.93 Ghz Xeon 4,1. If I have a DUAL Quad Core 2.93 Ghz processors tray (8 - processors) can I just swap out the processors trays? Or is the back board specific to each processors tray.

is a Mac Pro 2009 back board specific to each processors tray? Do I have to swap both the back board and the processors pray or just the processors tray to use a dual - quad core in a single machine?

Thanks for your help

As long as the dual processor tray is also from a 2009 mac pro it will work without changing the motherboard. The issue is compatibility with the SMC chips, 2009 is a single model year for them so you cannot swap processor trays with any other year.

Yes, I want to move a tray from a 2009 dual 2.93 GHz into another 2009 single 2.93 GHz machine.

The reason for the swap is the case. I bought a dual 2.93 machine but the case was all beat-up so I want to remove and put the processor tray in my clean machine.
