Only rumor I could find was this one. Other than that, we'll have to wait till WWDC for sure. IMO, the Shuffle probably won't get any updates at WWDC.

Well we'll see, but the rumor I heard sounded pretty legit.

If it were my decision, if they add a screen they should ditch the "shuffle".
iPod Micro

Buy i've heard rumblings of these rumors too.

I can guarantee you with 100% accuracy that it is not true. I mean 2 Ghz!
 That's faster than my iMac G5.
You obviously meant GB, but I couldn't resist, lol.

New iPod Shuffle g5!

Steve Jobs at WWDC 2005 introducing new iPod Shuffle g5! "Smaller than Steve Jobs and much more fun".

Apologies for my poor PhotoShop skills.

Could be G4 Shuffle models running at 1 and 2 Ghz. Probably the new dual-core G4s from Freescale. Yeah, dual dual-core processor G4 Shuffles! Yeah, that's the ticket. With 160 x 90 HD TFT LCD touch screens displaying millions of colors. Rock on!

awesome! plug into your existing mac's usb2 ports for use with xgrid! lol if you daisy chain 'em you can have a 234 processor supercomputer!!! :evil laugh:

In all seriousness now I just put my iPod shuffle through the wash (accidentally of course, although I'm wondering if on some subliminal level it was to give myself an excuse for a 2GB with screen), so I'm going to wait until tomorrow and otherwise go with another *EDIT*512 MB (I don't know where the 5GB came from)*EDIT*. Do you think a completely dead shuffle would qualify in the iPod recycle program?

That's rhetorical and meant to be a funny joke, right?

The putting it through the wash? Entirely true I'm afraid. It's just that I never FEEL the shuffle in the pockets when i pick up my jeans, where as my other iPod actually has weight so I always remember it's in there. I tried plugging it in this morning after it dried, and at first everything seemed great - the charging light started flashing! Annnnnd then Mac OS X told me it was "deactivating" the USB port because the device was "drawing too much power". And now the USB port's dead too (I used the one on my keyboard though, which I plan to swap for a BT one anyways, and maybe the port'll be reactivated when I reboot).
The subliminal message part was a joke. Although my shuffle was my most used gadget, so I'm definitely going to replace it tomorrow night. Whether or not I get more bang for my buck or a screen is up to Apple.
And the iPod Recycling program, I'm afraid, does not include shuffles.

Give it a few days before you give up. It may just need more time to dry completely.

I believe the part about putting the iPod Shuffle through the wash. That's easy enough to believe. What I wondered was if you were seriously asking if a Shuffle "would qualify in the iPod recycle program." I thought that you were being facetious.

Lol, well you did detect an original hint of sarcasm in the iPod Recycle portion of my post. However afterwards I realized it didn't seem like that crazy of an idea - why waste a $10 discount? So I checked the website, and sure enough shuffles are in fact too cheap, new and environmentally friendly to fit into the recycle basket.

well obviously not on monday or tuesday if atall. i dont paticuarly want them to be updated:
1. putting a small screen on would ruin the WHOLE idea of the ipod shuffle
2. most people dont need that much music on it(becuase they just use it for the gym etc) so size improvement isnt essential, i could see a possible 2gb at the highest

I agree with WM.. Give it a few days. Last fall my wife accidentally dropeed her cell phone outside of the car where it sat submerged in a water puddle for over 9 hours. I took it apart and tried to dry it out and it just would not work.. I let it sit for about a week and it finally powered up. I took the battery off again and let it sit for another two weeks and it started working perfectly again. The only issue I have had with it is that the battery doesn't last quite as long. Don't give up hope... It may survive yet.

I think not having a screen ruins the iPod shuffle.

For $100 you can get a non-Apple mp3 player that holds twice as much media, with screen and the ability to choose the song you want.

Sure - I enjoy a good surprise, but why would I pay $130 for the iPod shuffle?

The "lack of screen" shouldn't be seen as a 'feature'.

this pisses me off, and i dont even have one. its MEANT to be cheap!! cos its cheap, it cant hold millions on songs, and therefore doesnt need a screen!!! its UR music, u know what the f*cking song is called! why would anyone want an mp3 player with a tiny screen where u cant scroll through ur albums? all it does is tell u the name of the song, whats the point in that? its bollocks.

shuffle is the way forward if u cant afford anything bigger in the iPod range.

plus non apple mp3 players just arnt cool are they? i mean those pathetic sony things... and ANYONE who listens to music on their phone is a grade A wanker

Reiterating something I've previously stated...

My wife decided on a 4GB mini. She wanted the screen so she could choose her music. Apple decided shuffles didn't need elaborate navigation or a screen. So there shouldn't be a complaint about navigating or screens on a shuffle, it's not made for choosing specific tracks*.

As for 2 and 4GB Shuffles, I've always said, I'd be delighted if I could have multiple playlists and simply triple tap next or previous for the next or previous playlist (as with triple tap play/pause for reshuffle/track1). Then, I could have my daily run, work out, office mix, beach stroll all on my shuffle at once and with 2GBs - plenty of space. Apple would have me sold on a 2GB shuffle. I could even fill and enjoy a 4GB if I could use my playlist selection as noted above. I don't need or want a screen and absolutly love the form factor. In fact, I prefer it over an iPod Mini, weight and form factor alone.

Apple took the popularity of the iPod at the right time, and made a screenless player with which people could finally say, "Maybe I don't need a screen to enjoy my music". It was a bold attempt at a previously failed concept that resulted in a lot of raised eyebrows and in the end a successful and useful product. Which more and more companies are trying to emulate.

*A properly loaded playlist, played in 'Play in Order' mode works great. Load up ~20 albums sequentially and I can skip to the song/album I want with no problem. Load my songs in alphabetical order and I always know where to go if I need a certain song. Easy as a screen, no. Timely, sometimes. But, those are rare moments and not why I bought a shuffle.

Hmm, well if one truly wants a screen, then I think the iPod mini is a viable option.

The iPod Shuffle is intended to be its own thing, with its own target market. That market may also cross-over to current iPod owners. I love having an iPod (not necessarily the iPod itself), yet sometimes it is too big and not convenient. I run and cycle (and swim, yet using an iPod while swimming would just be silly); an iPod Shuffle is much better while doing those activities than an iPod, which works well when walking, riding public transportation, sitting at the office, etc., where I might look at the screen and navigate the menus. I would never look at the screen while exercising, so I don't need one. A screen on an iPod Shuffle is a feature that I'd prefer not to have and not to pay for. The fact that the iPod Shuffle is nearly weightless and can also be used as a flash drive is fantastic.

As for the surprise/random/shuffle feature, that is an option of the iPod Shuffle player, not its only method of playback. I rarely ever use the shuffle feature. I prefer to create my own playlist, load it to the iPod, and have that playlist play in the order I created. Yet knowing that if I get bored, then I can switch to a shuffle mode is very good.

So for me, no screen on an iPod Shuffle is a feature I am glad to have and not pay for.
