I was going to pick up a copy of Office X pro from the MS store, but I was curious if a new version was planned. I know Office 2003 is rolling out soon for the PC; any plans for software on a Mac? If so, I'll wait.

Office 97 was Windows-only.
Office 98 was Mac-only.

Office 2000 was Windows only.
Office 2001 was Mac-only.

Office 2003 is Windows-only.

Do you see a pattern here?

What was the time between 97/98, 2000/2001?

that's all I am wondering. I'm new to the mac scene

There is always a one year break between the release of one set system (ie 97/98, 2000/2001, XP[2002]/X and the next. So Expect Office v.X.1 in 2004. However I know the one year break didnot take place between XP and 2003, is M$ ever consistent.

And through all these updates when did they ever add significant functionality?

You'll be in good shape for years with whatever you can buy off the shelf today.

In Office 2003, they modified the calendar in Outlook. Now you have a side-by-side view of your calendar and anyone else in the organization you want to look at. It's easier now to schedule meetings this way. This is the only thing I have found that is useful.

As for an update, I agree with the others. I still haven't seen a beta come out in our MSDN kit, so it's probably going to be awhile.

On the PC side, MS Outlook 2003 is the one noticeable improvement in the latest Office revision. I don't own Office v.x so I cannot compare it to Entourage.

That being said, I wouldn't pay for the new Office2K3, or wait for a Mac version that has all its features. It's a lot of money for minimal improvements

The office applications stopped becoming innovative around 1993. Since then we've seen minimal and unnessary improvements every year. Oh well it's M$, I use Open Office or Star Office if I can. M$'s junk is forced onto us on their computers at school.

I think right now MS is working on a reliable G5 fix for Virtual PC. I've heard of nothing from my connections, office does need to be upgraded though.

One problem MS has had of late has been licensing issues with Virtual PC. Several of my business clients have wanted to license Office Pro for Mac and MS won't do licenses because of Virtual PC. MS has created a reseller nightmare so to speak in this area since they want us to push licensing.
