Long story short, I was working on my 2015 15" MBP trying to remove the adhesive off my old battery and I accidentally punctured and sliced into the battery, peeling the outer covering a little bit. Is the battery safe to use? The battery still functions and charges it's just punctured a little bit and the slice doesn't seem to expose that much. Will this battery blow up or cause harm or can I cover the slice with some packing tape and still be safe? I have some photos attached that you can refer to.

I am very interested in knowing the answer to this question because I have a similar problem. I used a knife and cut into the battery, meaning that, as far as I know, I could die in a fire tonight, tomorrow, or any other day this week.

I would highly discourage any usage of said battery.

No. I don't care what any of these other people say because they're wrong, period, end of story. I've literally witnessed multiple battery fires start because someone decided "it's ok if it's just the outer shell that's damaged". Maybe for a scratch but not opened up where you can see the inside. There's too great of risk of further damaging the battery that way.

I’d say absolutely no. These batteries are really dangerous. They explode really easily. Any charging can make them expand and contract, increasing the likelihood that puncture will cause the material to be exposed to air, at which point it’ll immediately turn into a fireball.

I’d unplug it get it out of the house or at the least stick it somewhere where if it explodes hopefully things won’t catch fire.

See if apple will work on it to replace it, and/or make sure you dispose of it in a legal and safe fashion, so it doesn’t hurt people when it explodes.

You can do as you’d like. I would not use it. Of course, I would not have been futzing with it either so consider that in your decision too ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
