Is an old Dual 2.3 PM faster than new Dual-Core 2.3?

This is seriusly wierd in my eyes. i can only realy afford to buy the midrange PM, and i'm sure that 2 x 2.3 G5 processors would run faster than 1 dual core 2.3.

I remember reading the dual core chips would be 50-50% faster than standard chips, so unless somthing else amazing is going on, they will be slower than the old dual 2.3s right?

No they will be faster. The new models also use DDR2 RAM which should help make them faster although probably not that much. I think one of the biggest upgrades, besides the dual core of course, is that the 6600 is standard in all models.

Actually core performance would depend on the core design. and a dual core can be just as fast as 2 single core chips.

The dual-core 2.3 has more cache and faster memory. The new system will be the same speed or faster depending on what you are doing with it.

One Single Processor, Dual Core 2.3Ghz G5 based machine is faster than one Dual Processor, Single Core 2.3Ghz G5.

Closer together, more efficient, faster.

Take a look at the numbers for the quad vs the old dual.

look at the graphs... they are only comparing the quad to the dual, not dual to "dual"

There is always overhead involved with adding processors, so it's hard to draw direct compares, I would LOVE to see some numbers regarding a dual 2.0 GHZ and dual core single proc 2.0 Ghz .... the memory update will help a lot, BUT really this has turned into a way for apple to reduce costs. They only need to buy one CPU... my guess is they are getting a 100-200 dollar break per unit they sell, and they have passed on none of that.

Next year we'll see the new "quad cores" all the way through the line, with the dual dual-core getting a speed bump to 2.7 Ghz... Apple will make less money, but they will be the update we should have gotten this time.

I just saw some bench marks for the DualCore 2.3 vs an old Dual 2.5.

Bascily, the dual 2.5 was faster and more powerfull, but the DualCore 2.3 won overall cos it scored much higher on the memory part of the bench marks..

Not quite sure what i should do still. Seems silly spending £1500 when an extra 500 will buy you more than double the performance.

I might just have to bite the bullet, go quad and hope it doesn't break in the next 6 years or somthing
