Is anyone able to get "google file stream" running on the new M1 Macs?

I get an error saying "drive file stream requires your approval" "open system preferences"

but then when I click it, there's no option for giving access to file steam, and I get an error "drive file system encountered and error and has stopped"

experiencing the same thing and from a bit research I have bad news. We are at the mercy of Google, something to do with kernels so the current version won’t run under Rosetta on apple silicon, Google needs to release an actual apple silicon version....which I hope they do soon.

It's to do with the extension being blocked as it doesn't support arm64. Generally I find if an app doesn't work it appears in system information, under Software => Disabled Software

My chat with Google went differently, with them suggesting this would be patched likely in January. Which for me probably means returning this MacBook to apple. :(

Google Workspace Support, A: So the issue occurs when you try to log in, right? So, you place your credentials and you click on continue and the error shows up?

Chris: No, it doesn't get that far. I click "Sign In" and then it encounters an error

Google Workspace Support, A: Okay Chris thank you very much for the information, so while we were talking I was reviewing the updates and news and there are no ETA still on the new update for the software, however, I do think that it is a compatibility issue that is probably going to get resolve on the next patch.

Chris: Thanks. Any guess when that next patch might be? Roughly speaking?

Chris: I appreciate your help.

Google Workspace Support, A: It can be December but the holidays are coming so my best guess will be January.

You may want to try Mountain Duck or Cyberduck. Both seem to work fine for me. Probably will not go back to the native client

Has anyone figured out a workaround for file stream yet? I see few have gotten backup & sync to work with some steps.

Thanks for this heads up on this app. I am using it as a workaround for now. At least I can get some work done now.

I read another thread on this yesterday on which Google replied it might be ready "mid-2021"!

Another thread on a Google forum suggested the patch might take until "mid-2021". IIRC, May 2021 was mentioned. It may be sooner if enough people kick up a stink with Google over this.

I use CyberDuck and it works well, but Mountain Duck looks like a better solution for integrating the GSuite Drive with the MacOS Finder.

Can GSuite accounts use the normal "Backup and Sync"? Google info suggests this might be possible. https://support.google.com/drive/answer/7638428?hl=en

I just got my M1 Mac and GDFS not working is a big bummer, because as hacky as it is/was, at least it would get indexed by Spotlight (because it mounted as a "local" drive, I assume?).

Does anyone have any alternate options that get indexed by Spotlight (and therefore Alfred)? I tested Mountain Duck and CloudMounter and they don't index, plus Mountain Duck/CyberDuck's support page outright states that too.

I'm having a few issues with Mountain Duck on my M1. It hangs quite a lot, not sure if this is due to emulation issues as there is no universal version yet.

Neither GDFS nor Backup and Sync work on 11.1, but odrive is a decent enough alternative if someone needs indexing -- it mounts cloud storage in the User folder so Spotlight et al can see the files.
Their file streaming method is a little unusual since it even uses placeholders for folders, and requires you to actually double click the folder to even see anything inside. I set it up to sync some key folders completely (a la Backup and Sync, or offline mode in other cloud storage (mounting) apps) to get around this minor annoyance.

THIS !
I really need this to be working soon, I have no idea if Google has any interest in fixing this any time soon.

The workaround is to use https://www.odrive.com/ works in same way to file stream in order to access all your google drive files without taking any space on your m1 mac. Once setup you can carry on as usual until drive brings the patch out later this month
