I am a Mac person, make no mistake about it. I have two iMacs an iPhone and 3 iPods. I really believe that OSX is by far the best OS on the market and the new iMac's rock. With all that said I was really not excited by MacWorld at all. The MBA is too expensive and is underpowered & I rent my movies from Netflix which I have had 0 issues with.

Recently on a flight from Chigago to LAX I was watching a movie on my iPhone and the guy across the aisle from me was watching one on his iPod touch. We compared notes and after seeing the screen of someone who had a Sony portable DVD player we both said how nice it would be if Apple had a Video iPod with a bigger screen. In fact I think Apple could kick some butt in this market and was kind of dissappointed to see that there are no plans to introduce one.

I would also like to see an Apple tablet PC, no bigger than a 5x7, that lets me check my eMail and calendar and allows me to write notes in meetings.

Leopard was late coming to market and I guess there isn't another OSX release planned until mid 2009. I guess for now the only new product will be the new chips in iMac's and from what I read there is not much difference in performance between 2.8 and 3.17. Anyone else disappointed?

Really?

Year opens with significant new Mac Pro. These exceeded expections by offering only the higher-end 1600MHz FSB. Very nice machines.

MacWorld brings us:
  • iTS Movie Rentals (all major studios)
  • Really nice AppleTV firmware update with direct-rentals, normal and HD. Fantastic.
  • Time Capsule (very nice product)
  • New iPhone software
  • The fantastic 3lb MacBook Air
  • Touch technology comes to the first laptop

And what lies ahead for 2008?
  • MBPs and MBs that are cooler running
  • MBPs and MBs that are faster but have significantly better battery life
  • Much better screens for the MacBook
  • SSD eventually finding their way into all Mac laptops (this year)
  • iPhone opened to 3rd party apps via SDK
  • Likely quad-core iMac by end of year
  • iPhone with GPS and 3G
  • iPhone Nano (?)
  • Minis that can hold 4GB of RAM
  • Nehalem and Montevina
  • 32GB iPod Touch and iPhone
  • 16GB Nanos
Now we can look forward to cooler running laptops (MBP and MB)

Yeah man, bummer of a year this is.

What I really wanted was a 12" or 13" MacBook Pro. Hopefully there'll be one eventually.

i'm not bummed at all.

It's hard for a company to always smack the industry with something leading edge as the iphone. Also, i firmly believe a company, even as good as Apple, needs to maintain focus on their product line....maybe introducing new things, but not too many that they lose focus. the ipod touch/iphone line is great where it is (needing higher capacity HDs maybe) i think it would be silly for them to make a large sized ipod video. Maybe a touch bigger than the current version, but nothing like a sony portable player. higher costs, bigger for customers to carry, more power required. bad idea imho. the idea of the ipod is to be somewhat small, portable and easy to use of course. not saying a portable dvd player isn't easy to use, but it's not small.

i think whether anyone is bummed or disappointed rests solely on personal expectations of course.

hope that helps to brighten your 2008 mac-wise :)

btw, i bet the person with the sony player was drooling over your ipods and how easy it was to carry :)

Cheerios,

What people such as the OP need to realize is that Steve Jobs leads Apple to build products that he thinks you want (or need), not necessarily what the consumer wants or needs.

I'm quite comfortable with 2008 for Apple so far. Come on, its only January. Not every year is going to be "iPhone" revolutionary. The MBA is a cool product for those that want and will make use of it. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple had a few things up their sleeves, but that remains to be seen. I'm happy their doing well and hopefully will continue to do well, so that they can keep providing us with nice computers and other gadgets. :)

I modified your statement to make it a little more honest. Unless of course, you can show that you actually know what consumers want more than Apple does.

We can't credibly claim that individual consumers are more knowledgeable of the demands of the mass market than one of the world's most successful mass marketers.

Basically, Apple has a pretty strong track record of pegging what consumers want.

If they listened to this forum, the first iMac would have had a floppy, a separate monitor, SCSI support and a $2199 price tag, because that's what "everyone" wanted. It would have flopped, of course.

The iPhone would have had an 80gb hard drive and 50% of them would be in repair by now, since phones live harder lives than music players. It also would have been 30% thicker with a user-replaceable battery. Might have sold for $999, unlocked of course, since that's what "everyone" wanted, and it would have had to be profitable without the AT&T subsidy.

Etc.
