When connected to a monitor, I would like the ability to shut off the screen since it won't be used and to preserve the OLED screen. It's great that iPadOS is becoming more useful, but we've complained about this for years. I can't imagine this feature being hard to implement. It would be great if the stage manager could work with dual monitors.

Just asking, so turn off the screen but keep the iPad unlocked?
OP is using the iPad with an external monitor. It's a silly limitation for an expensive Pro tablet that even in Apple's own advertising is shown in a picture connected to a 32" Pro Display XDR. Who needs to use the 11" iPad display when you got it connected to the huge XDR display on your desk?

Because not being able to turn the iPad display off means it's getting in the way. Apps keep launching on the tiny 11" display. My iPad just lays flat on the desk and I can't see the screen. You can guess how annoying it is when windows open on the wrong display and I gotta lean over to move it to my external monitor.

Could I get a stand for the iPad? Sure. But I am not using that display in docked mode either way so turning it off would be the obvious solution.

Can I answer that one? I present exhibit one: Me… using a pencil working on graphics and figures while the type setting/layout and analysis programs are on the XDR 🤓

Back when I had an iPad, when I plugged it into my monitor, it bugged me like crazy that the iPad screen had to stay on. So I'd turn the brightness all the way down and throw a towel on it... So yeah, that frustrated me a lot.

As iPads can run warm in their respective MKBs, I don't think passive cooling and running and iPad closed is going to give the reliable performance that Apple wants to put their name on.

As for a dark screen while it's open, I suppose they could deliver that.. I'm sure some would have real use cases for it, but me - not so much.

If a MacBook Air can stay open and support dual monitors effectively making 3 displays at once then an iPad will be just fine with a lightweight iPadOS.

Is it possible for stage manager to be open on the monitor while the iPad has one app open? I haven’t used stage manager with a monitor myself. If this is possible, you could have the iPad open to Photos and simply have a black rectangle in view, effectively turning the oled display off.

It's possible but it doesn't help as notifications are still shown on the iPad display, as well as Control Center and new windows and apps sometimes opening on the iPad.
I would say it helps as a workaround for now, but not a full solution. My guess is Apple analytics show few people doing this, not enough to warrant a solution.

What about the iPad folio covers? Will closing them lock the iPad during stage manager with a monitor, or just turn the screen off? I’m guessing lock but it’s another possibility that occurred to me.
