Mainly the spread thumb and three fingers to show desktop gesture? Why is this not switchable to the old four fingers up? What're the chances that Apple will let us switch this in the final release?

None. For all intents and purposes, this is the final release. Which is unfortunate, because the old gesture was easier, even if this one makes more sense from a visual perspective.

What's wrong with the other ones?

I just tried the expand one on a magic trackpad, and it's easier than on the Macbook.

I haven't touched Lion yet, but I imagine I will just completely gut out the gestores and make my own using BetterTouchTool, just like I did with SL.

Can't you just put four fingers on the trackpad and spread them slightly? No need to use your thumb! Maybe even spreading just one or two fingers is enough for it to understand, as long as you have 4 fingers touching the trackpad. They don't all have to move and one doesn't have to be your thumb.

I've tried. I got it once out of the 20ish failed attempts. I'd rather do the thumb + 3 thing.

BetterTouchTool is an absolute must for both the Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad. Like someone else already said i turned off ALL gestures in the apple preferences and made my own with BTT, its a pity Apple are such control freaks and force us to use gestures they see fit.....
