Am I alone in this?

I have an 8GB iPhone. It holds all my media that I need, and I don't bring it running or for exercising or anything, due to the fact it's a bit large.

That being said, I by no means need to carry my (600 song, ahem, massive, eh?) library with me everywhere. In fact, 50 songs or less would be MORE than sufficient. I only use my current shuffle for the gym, running, hiking, etc. (those little tasks where you don't need everything).

50 songs at 128kbps would be like 200MB. Would that not be awesome for us gym rats? Not only could it be a lot smaller, think of the price. (Heck, I could even get by with 100MB easily.) It couldn't cost more than $20 at most...

I mean seriously, who carries 1,000 songs at the gym? For the love of God that's a lot too much. And I'd imagine that's the target market. They'd absolutely dominate it at that price, and in theory they could go even lower.

So, am I alone in thinking this? Wouldn't it be stellar for Apple to perhaps introduce a lot more storage options?

200MB - $20
1GB - $40
2GB - $60
4 GB - $80

I would buy it in an instant. I'd feel so wasteful if I were to buy this new guy, using 50/1,000 songs. PLEASE APPLE. :(

1gb shuffle refub is close to that price.

No one is going to want something that small. The trolls would have a field day if anything small capacity like that is released.

But it's not the current generation?

No one? Read the first post. For those of us who only bring a small amount of songs to the gym, and only use it for the gym/running (too small and not functional enough for anything else), it would be perfectly ideal. I'm sure I'm not the only one who doesn't bring their whole movie library to the gym.

With the danger of sounding obvious, buy the 1gig and stick 50 songs on it? The 2nd gen's definitely small enough for the gym.

You could buy one of the 512mb 1Gs off ebay, but it's not so clippable.

well, it would be nice to have a $20 shuffle for sports. with all the rain, water, dropping it, heat, sun and cold ipods don't last very long. would be nice to have a cheap device where you don't care if it breaks or gets stolen. i'd love to take one into the sauna or hot tub but at $80 the risk is too high.

Dude, go back to 1999 if that's what you want. 256mb for an mp3 player? Don't waste your time. Apple would be laughed at by the entire internet's if they introduced even a 512mb mp3 player.

Google's your friend for 256mb players that are $20. Have fun.

I understand an all-conditions iPod. Such as every shuffle made. Even the Nano is a great choice for that. But making a disposable electronic device is a step back for Apple. Look at how much they are pushing their Green Certifications these days. A $20 device isn't environmentally friendly not to mention the number of people who want a <1Gb mp3 player are definitely in the minority.
(not saying you want one, but rather it makes little sense)

But I don't see what's wrong with offering the option. Create a large stock of 250mb ones (or 1gb, whatever, just small enough that it's under $30 for the NEW gen) and I'm sure many of us would be happy.

Too bad you missed out on Apple of the mid-90's when they had every configuration known to man available. Which of course lead to Apple nearly killing itself.

It isn't that simple Doju.

why dont you just go and find an original shuffle that runs at 512mb?

its small enough to run and work out with.
its close to the size you need.
its cheap on amazon or ebay.

yeah, 250 meg is really old hat. Price wise, I don't think the 1G shuffle is that bad. I use my while jogging, biking, and working on my car and its perfect (its pretty durable too :D )

Surely you could get something low capacity and cheap on ebay?

It's the same with the really cheap PC's that can just about run internet software - it's just not economical for Apple to compete at that end of the market. Unbranded mass produced Chinese imports are what you're looking for, not an iPod.

you do realize the industry is well past 250mb chips these days. it would be expensive to revert to that design again as its not mass produced a all afaik

Do people even make 250 Mb chips anymore? lol. It won't happen, i understand where you're coming from, but i'm fine with the way things are at the moment, but i will never use 4GB with my new shuffle (if it ever gets dispatched).

no, i'm not longing for on. to be honest, that's the most ridiculous thing i've heard. Why in the world would you want an mp3 player that can hold 5 cds?
stupid, stupid, stupid

This is ridiculous. Apple wouldn't do it for marketing alone. The MB hasn't 'sold' for upwards of 5 years now.

Most of the cost isnt in the memory. It is the the rest of the device that makes up the bulk of the cost.

It might even cost more to get 256mb of memory for your 'mini shuffle' then it would to get 2gb. As was said earlier, they dont make such low density chips in quantity anymore.

I wish Apple would release computers using the Motorola 68000 again. I mean seriously, all I do is word processing and the occasional spreadsheet! 128K RAM should be MORE than sufficient for day-to-day work. At least they should give consumers the option :mad::(:mad:
