Phones Is anyone still rocking the Palm Pre

Does anyone still have this phone and use it? I know this is kind of out of left field, but I was thinking about how great this phone was, and how the whole company is dead now. I never got my hands on one, but I played with enough to know and appreciate the OS. I really wish we could see something like that again. Anyone else like this phone?

My brother developed an app and released it a long time ago on webOS. They sent him a Palm Pre Plus when he expressed interest, so it's lying around somewhere. The OS definitely had potential, and was overall decent to use, but the hardware truly sucked. It creaked, felt cheap, and the keyboard was tiny and worse than a virtual keyboard.

The software was well-thought out, but SLOOOWWWWW. Like ridiculously slow. Performance and fluidity were really inconsistent across the board.

Yea I think it was just in the early stages and never got its feet off the ground. HP just never put the time in.

Yea it seems that way. I have been really wanted to try a blackberry out, but I don't want to spend much money. I had an old curve about 5 or 6 years ago and liked it, but with the way things are now it just does not keep up I don't think. To this day I still liked the keyboard the most on the blackberry.

If you want to use WebOS on a fairly recent (ish) device. There's a project to port WebOS to the Galaxy Nexus, last time I saw it they'd managed to enable hardware acceleration so the UI was no longer a jerky mess. You could see if the project matures enough and get your hands on an old GNex if you wanted. Otherwise your best bet is the HP Pre 3.

Of course if its just some of the features you enjoy, you can emulate the task switcher in Android by using the free app "Task Switcher Pro". You can also download an app called "Wave Launcher" which enables you to emulate the way you could slide up from the bottom in any screen to access the dock.

Blackberry isn't retarded like Palm, and was smart enough to get their new flagship on all carriers out the gate.

Palm committed suicide by first putting all their eggs in the Verizon basket, getting screwed for millions and then giving Sprint an exclusive.

Not only that, but they hold a Developer conference in San Francisco where they didn't introduce anything new, and they were giving away their devices to the media (but none to the actual developers). And we (the developers) have to wait for a long time before we can buy a developer unlocked version of the Pre Plus. The way how they initially handle the developer relationships pissed a lot of potential developers off.

webOS is freaking brilliant - so much so that I've pretty much pledged my undying loyalty to it despite it, well, being almost dead. It does have quite a few bugs and issues, which could have been worked out if Palm had had the resources to do so. But it's still miles ahead of any other mobile OS I've ever used in terms of ease of use and design. I'm still quite peeved at HP for royally screwing webOS users and the platform in general.

The hardware is... less than good. I've had to buy three new back covers since owning this phone, they just fall apart. But props to the keyboard on the Pixi; never have I been so comfortable and quick on a phone before.

I had a Pre 2 and a HP Pre 3..... I gave both away and both died (6 months or so after) not too long after I gave them away to a family member.

i had an original pre on sprint and a pixi plus on verizon (for the free tethering). i loved the idea of web os, but it was just too painfully slow to be any good. the anemic app marketplace wasn't helpful either.

the pre's touchscreen stopped responding after a drop from the top of a coffee table. the pixi i traded for a windows phone during the windows phone 8 challenge last year.

That is awesome you are still holding strong. I really wish I had gotten a Palm before they died. I had the iphone 3g about the time they started making the pre and just never got a chance. I wish a decent company would come along and buy the rights and make it something great. We could use a fresh idea.

I did not know that it was that big of a deal. I thought rocking would be more appropriate since the OS is all but dead, and the phone has been out for more than 5 years.

This OS had a lot of potential. It could have been great if they made good hardware to go with it. Its too bad that it was mismanaged. This could have possible been the one to lure me away from Apple but its not going to happen now.

haha i bought the pixi for my mom because she wanted to have a small phone with a physical keyboard and she loved it. started to disintegrate though and would randomly not have reception so she switched to an iphone 5. shes still trying to swipe back in apps to get to the homescreen or undo changes on the iphone

I love my Pre 2

I still use my unlocked HP Palm Pre 2 as my main phone.
I had a Pre 1 but the hardware went bad after a few months. Not so with the HP Pre 2 which I've had for a couple of years, dropped a zillion times, etc. and it is still as good as new. And I love it. I've tried other phones (iPhone, Sony Experia, Samsung) which my mobile company has pushed on me but after a day or so, I go back to the Pre 2. One thing I like about the Pre is that I like having a physical keyboard (which the Experia had, but it was bulkier) but I also like WebOS. How I wish it Palm had lived on....
