Hey guys

I think the answer will be no but maybe someone has been in recently and seen them. I know they carry the 17" MBP with an i7 which is also BTO. I was planning on doing a BTO 13" 4GB 128GB but I have to write a report and need a portable for that. I was hoping that I could just pick up one from the Apple store rather than a) having an angry boss b) being stuck with a 2GB MBA. I have a mini but it isn't portable enough for me.

Your best bet is to call to nearby Apple Stores. Some stores do while some don't. If they don't carry it, you can get the 2GB version now, return it when you have finished the report (you have 14 days to return it) and then buy BTO from online store

I know that in the US several stores are stocking the "ultimate" configurations of the 11.6" (i.e. 1.6/4 GB/128 SSD) and the 13.3" (i.e. 2.13/4GB/256 SSD) I have yet to hear of any store stocking any other CTO/BTO configurations, so your best bet would be to call your local store. Some reps answering the phone may just say that they don't stock any custom configurations, but ask them to check with their inventory specialist to make sure.

There are several threads on this but, yes, at least in the US, many Apple stores are carrying "ultimate" versions of both the 11" and 13" model. That's how I was able to get my broken Air swapped yesterday. However, they don't have every 4GB configuration in store.

I bought my ultimate at the local Apple Store, the Orland Park, IL store, just called and asked as it's not listed on the sign next to the machines.

The apple stores are closed at the moment, hence the thread. Timing sucks. I will end up with the stock model I think. I planning on buying an iMac next refresh so power won't be a problem for me then. I just need something for internet and some iWorks/iPhoto (rarely).

Yes, that model and the 11" "ultimate" seem to be quite ubiquitous. Every Apple store seems to have them, though I haven't seen any other 4GB models in store. So Apple will sell you the cheapest MacBook Air models and the most expensive, but the other upgrades are all custom order online.

I was delighted when I discoverd my local Apple store (Manchester, UK) had 11" ultimates. Got it Friday just gone, otherwise I'd have had to wake a couple of weeks as there'd be no one in to receive it at our house till at least the 26th.

Tremendous piece of kit. Assuming you're not planning on doing anything crazily intensive with it, it's utterly fantastic.

I bought my loaded 13 inch MBA at the OKC Apple Store, who had it in stock. I was in the Tulsa Apple Store over the weekend and was told by an employee there that they carry both the Ultimate 11 inch and 13 inch MBAs in stock.

I'm popping to Manchester tomorrow, might have a look and see what they have in store.

I am not looking for the so called ultimate. I am looking for the 13" 128GB with 4GB. Ultimate isn't really a fitting name for any technology, is it?

You won't find this configuration in any Apple stores. Only the two standard of each size and the ultimate of each size.

LOL true. I don't know what the store policies are in Japan regarding returns and restocking fees, etc. but you may consider just buying a stock unit and ordering the CTO online, and return the stock unit when the CTO comes in. Obviously there are some ethical issues involved with this, but since you are purchasing a machine from Apple and not just "renting" one, you may be able to justify it.

I called my local stores to buy the 11" netbook version for my assistant after I already had the 13" for my own use. I'm in Chicago and there are several stores in my market but none had the "ultimate" version I wanted so I ordered online. I got it from Singapore 3.5 days later. Shipping is pretty fast now it seems.

Make sure you press them to check their stock, first time I asked (last Thu, day before I bought it) the guy was convinced they weren't selling them until he checked.

That's a build-to-order only.

I remember about 20 years ago PC/Computing magazine once ran a series "In Search of the Ultimate PC." It chronicled one of their editor's attempts to assemble a PC with the best of every component to create a "dream machine" over a period of months.

They have ultimates in the stores

At both the Bay Street and SF stores they had ultimate 13" models, 2.13 processor, 4 gb ram & 256 gb SSD. Bought mine Friday, and it is sweet!:)

I bought my maxed out 11" at the Apple store, that was after asking two employees if they had it. Neither knew. Only after speaking with the manager did they find it in back. If I were you I would not call, I'd go to the store and ask the manager to check the stock room.

Yes you will.

It's a geographic / demographic factor. Three of the six Apple stores in my area carry this model. We have great Apple stores nearby, with large inventories.

You have stores with the base 13" and 4GB memory? I was under the impression from the store managers I had talked to in my area that the store configurations were standardized.

Yes we do, and no it's not. That's right from a Regional Apple Manager.

OK, I guess the information I was told was wrong. Given all three stores in my area were basically the same I assumed the information was correct. Which area are you in and what other configurations are they carrying?

I will call the two apple stores in Tokyo and see if they have any. I may just get the stock or go for the *AIR QUOTE*ultimate*AIR QUOTE* which is a little expensive but I do have the cash.

I told myself I only wanted the 13" with 128 gig drive and 4 gig Ram. Went to the Apple Store looking for said model and walked out with the ultimate. Now that I'm past the sticker shock, I'm glad I did! Sure, it was more than I wanted to spend but it did not change my life style, eh...

That big Apple store on "The Magic Mile" didn't have the ultimate version? I would have thought that that store, if any, would carry the ultimate. :)

My local apple store in fort worth had the ultimate 13": on the phone, the rep said that they don't and won't carry any 4gb models, but when I went to the store a few hours later, they had them. I'm sure that the rep on the phone just didn't know yet, so you should ask them to check their stock to be sure.
