Is apple falling behind on software?

I found certain things like these to be common sense yet it takes many clicks/swipes on ios to even do these (if it's even possible). When did the iPhone become more confusing to use than Android?

Everyone knows iOS sucks at a lot of stuff and is a frustrating claustrophobic prison. Common knowledge for years.

i buy all kinds of devices b/c i want to see what other manufacturers are doing better than what i currently have. my next phone is probably gonna be the pixel 3. best take away from the x was i liked the gestures and suddenly found the dedicated home button/back arrow annoying to use. told myself i won't buy another phone without gestures.

worse thing about the x was why can't i attach what i want to an email without going through icloud?!?!? such a simple thing which makes it even more frustrating

Coming from a Pixel 2 I can tell you gesture navigation is way more fluid and intuitive on iOS 12 than android pie

naw apple had a huge lead in the beginning. android earned its rep for being laggy and scattered. ios was the best thing since sliced bread when steve jobs was still alive. restrictive is fine is they are constantly adding useful features. i just feel apple has REALLY fallen behind on that front.

yeah thats my sticking point if i leave samsung. the gestures are the best i've ever used. way more advanced and robust than on the x.

Bingo. What is this "behind" or "ahead"? What does that even mean and more importantly what does it matter as far as me simply using the tool that does what I need/want?

Exactly. No one cares what device/OS I use and I don’t care what device/OS anyone else uses.
I know lots of non techie people who don’t use both Android and iOS to their full advantage.

For your average user it’s Facebook,Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and can they manipulate these platforms on their chosen device.

Yes, it has been since iOS 7. iOS 12 is good for older devices, but it’s still a overhyped half-polished version of iOS 11 to me. I also don’t understand all the “smooth, buttery, silky” hyperbole wording when describing its performance. I see stutters and frame drops all the time and have done since iOS 7. They must be using a completely different version to me. Control centre randomly stutters on the X and XS, it will be smooth one minute but will then stutter the next time you swipe it down. iPad multitasking stutters when swiping between open apps, the App Store stutters, the Watch App disgustingly stutters, the Music App stutters... it isn’t consistent at all. I thought iOS 12 was supposed to be resolving the frame rate issues? It has merely just sped up things like the share sheet and made opening apps a little faster. It isn’t smoother at all. iOS hasn’t been smooth since iOS 6. Every version since has added useful features but has been a cluster you-know-what in terms of execution, stability and polish. And those three things are what drew me to iOS in the first place. Now I find myself looking forward to the Pixel 3 (already have a Pixel 2) and am wanting to upgrade when I wouldn’t have even considered Android in the past because the experience of iOS was so good.

I’ve had every galaxy s phone besides the 5 and now the 9. Also had a Oneplus 3, lg v20 and 2 Moto z play (liked it so much I bought an extra from Best Buy for $150 refurb sale)

I can’t get myself to buy another android. I really want to, but I just can’t do it. I’m considering a v30 to use as a media player. I am very interested in the 6T and the 6, but I just can’t pull the trigger. I don’t need Nova anymore. I have never rooted a phone. I’m also hooked on my Apple Watch, so I’m pretty much locked in just for that. I don’t own an Apple TV, iPad or MacBook.

I’m very interested in the v40, pixel 3 xl, note 9, 6T and a few big screen budget Chinese phones like the mi max 3 and the 7.1” honor phone. But I just can not pull the trigger on ANY of them. My 8+ does what I want it to do and has the most predictable battery life I’ve ever had. Certainly not the best (z play wipes the floor with it) but Android system has never drained my battery in my pocket, and sending iMessages with high quality pictures is a breeze for my wife and daughter. Pics would come in on my s8+ and look like they were barely 420p.

I guess you could say I was a onetime android fanatic who is waiting for a definitive reason to go back. I know all the phones I listed above will be great, but none of them will work with my watch and all of them are bound to have issues and terrible resale value in a year when I inevitably go to sell them. Sad, really. I want to believe.

I've been using the Huawei P20 Pro until I got the XS Max. Haven't used iOS since my 6s Plus and I was interested to see how iOS has developed over those years. Obviously both have pros and cons, so I think there is no clear winner anymore.

iOS gestures > Android Pie gestures for example. But on Android I can place my app icons on the bottom which allows me to easily reach those on a huge device. Why iOS does not allow me to do that is beyond me. It's like they still develop their OS on an iPhone 4 and ignore the bigger sizes. Also notifications on Android beat the the iOS system.

So I wouldn't say Apple is falling behind yet but I was expecting a bit more.

I too am less than impressed on all the emoji stuff.
Good battery life like 10 would be nice. Or better is to improve it.
I don’t understand why there is stuttering of the user interface. Poor programming and/or poor architecture I suppose.

Where is the interface stuttering? iOS 12.1 b2 on a 6s is very smooth.

Gosh, I don't think so. There are design choices people do and don't like, but that's more a matter of taste than advancement. In areas like privacy, security, machine learning, image processing, graphics libraries, augmented reality, speech synthesis, audio and video editing, and hardware integration (not to mention designing Swift – for my money, one of the best programming languages there's ever been), I'd nominate Apple as a leader if not the leader.
