I noticed something different with Apple with this iPhone 6 launch, beginning with the keynote. They seemed to backdown on the Android bashing and seemed to really emphasize how much bigger the new iPhones are. But...they also did something different....they released a guide on how to switch from Android to iOS.

Sure, Apple has always been in competition with Android, but now it seems like instead of expanding iOS to completely new smartphone users, it seems like they are doing a lot to make iOS more open with more choices. Even iMessage has the ability now to text non-Apple people in iOS 8.Let's not forget about extensions and keyboards.

Do you guys think this is happening and do you think they will be successful? I was standing in line with a friend for the iPhone 6, and a lot of people in line were upgrading from larger Android phones like the Note 3. Not that I'm saying this is typical, but there were a lot.

Before Apple seemed to not care about Android users, now they do. Well I know I'm definitely switching.

I can see why some Android users would go for the iPhone for the bigger screen but I can't see why note users would. There's nothing on the plus that hasn't been on the note series for a while now.

I would of considered going for the plus if they actually added good enough features for the larger screen but they didn't really. Just a bigger iPhone.

Yap, Sherlock. Of course they are fishing in the android waters, and there are enough users eager to switch.

I'll try one myself (iPhone 6) because I like the rounded edges (dig my Nexus4) and Touch ID.

I have a Note 3 and I'm selling it for the iPhone 6 Plus 64 GB Gold. Touchwiz is a frustrating experience to me, and the multitasking is very limited for what I do. Not to mention my battery has been draining fast even after a full restore.

The Note 3 has a lot of great ideas, but I think it needs to be more refined from a software point of view.

I can see why touchwiz might put people off but for me the key areas where note is Alot better at

Multitasking
Back button option
Widgets
Removable batteries
S pen
My files

And that's just off the top of my head. Best battery life of any phone I've had and having a spare when needed is useful. Screen is also stunning from All reports.

IPhone is a fantastic device but I wouldn't say iOS is that great either software wise.

If iPhone offered home screen widgets it would of been so tempting.

Not really a Sherlock thing, Watson. More like Dr. Who.

Apple hasn't really been directly competitive with Android for years. I mean for the core Android users. Apple's been ''blah blah we have the App store and security'' but now they are seemingly answering many of the quips Android users have said about why they won't switch to Android. Extensible, keyboards and a larger screen size has been one of the main complaints for Galaxy and Droid owners. The lines are starting to be blurred. All that's needed now is a file management system and we're golden.

Ehhh, not the hardcore Android fans.

I just put my iP6+ on Craigslist to see if I can make a profit and make a return to my OPO--which is the best Android device I've owned.

I was dissapointed by the multitasking ot be honest. I guess I was expecting something Windows like. But it's limited to a very small amount of apps compared to the 200+ on my phone.

Back button, yes I will miss that. Some widgets I will miss, but usually depend on notifications somehow instead.

I also wish the iPhone had AMOLED....I'm a sucker for infinite blacks.

Hard core people are pretty much entranced Android vs. Apple.

I doubt many hardcore Android users will switch over to Apple purely because of the bigger sizes 4.7 or 5.5 inch screens.

As you see from random excuses from hard core Android users. They still won't switch because they simply don't like Apple. It won't matter how much Apple opens up their iOS. Apple can be running the same exact software as Android and hard core Android users will not switch.

Even the non hard core users may not switch. Time and time again it's been shown people don't like to switch.

I'm the odd man out I guess.

Yeah I wish more apps were allowed. Hopefully in time there will be. Would struggle without it though and multitasking has got even better with the note 4

End of the day Alot of people's usage is different. Hopefully you enjoy your iPhone experience :)

Note or iPhone you are getting a great device either way.

You are not. I've owned the Vibrant/Note 2/S3/4, almost all the Nexus except the first one. All the iPhones as well.

Just saying the vast majority of users 80% (or so) are so entrenched in the mobile operating systems, a bigger screen isn't going to be the many deciding factor to switch to Apple.

True. Perhaps the move was just to keep users from leaving?

Yeah I'm switching to the 6+, but I really have my eye on a Galaxy Tab S. The screen. SO boootyful.

When it comes to tablets, I really need productivity and will probably get a Tab S or Galaxy Note 2015 Edition if that's what it will be called.

Yeah I'm waiting for the next note 8.0 .I still use the current one but next to my other devices the screen stands out.

I don't agree, though I'm speaking for myself. If iPhones could run Android, I'd get one. Hardcore Android users won't switch because Apple won't allow us to do what we want to do, and they never will because it runs contrary to their entire philosophy. I'd prefer the build quality and smaller size of the iPhones, but since I can't have control over the device, I'm not getting one.

Is there a certain part of iOS you don't like in particular, or just the entire thing?

For me, the two glaring things right now is home screen combustibility (the entire screen is the app drawer) and restrictions on downloading directly to the iOS device (I use piratebay, for example, and love being able to download directly to my Note 3).

Just to name one thing, I wish iOS has is the ability to search near by places in the dialer just like Google.. I never noticed how much I use that feature.

You can do that...on any Android device?

No matter how nice the hardware design is, or how good a select few features are on iOS, I still can't deal with how restrictive it is. Can't deal with the features it's missing vs plain Android and most manufacturer skins. Also Google apps and integration are much inferior on iOS than on Android.

I want to like the iPhone again. But iOS is just more of the same, and too locked down for me.

Pretty much the whole thing. I don't like not being able to see and change source code, install my own OS, delete any application I don't want, sideload apps, etc. I also don't like the license agreement, which says Apple owns the OS, not me. I have many similar complaints about Android, but it's not nearly as bad. I have the same objections to OS X, but at least I don't have to use OS X on my MBP or PowerBook if I don't want to.

It's too bad because I really like the fingerprint sensor, smaller form factor, and physical construction of the iPhone.

I can see that.

iOS isn't too bad on a phone for me, just because I mostly use it to internet browse, play games and take notes. But on a tablet, it's like a mini TV screen and the iPad doesn't cut it for me. The restrictions are more glaring on a tablet for me, especially as a student. the iPad is made for multitasking side-by-side screeens but Apple says no. One the Note Pro one can use 4 apps at the same time I think.

----------

I believe it was implemented in 4.4.3

Been using my Note 3 for almost a year and had no idea I could do that in the dialer.

I can see that.

that may be a stock android dialer feature, I'm not sure (because I'm on stock)

The dialer will also search google for unknown phone numbers in an attempt to ID them if results are available. Works for incoming calls from businesses.
