After watching the interview earlier today and thinking a bit about what Jobs said there I've started wondering if Apple might be slowly positioning the AppleTV as a network PC instead of just a media center.

* Jobs stating very clearly that .Mac is going to get some major upgrades in the near future:
Interviewer: You obviously have a very large internet-business with iTunes and you sell a lot of stuff on the Apple Store, but you were early with this idea that when you bought a computer with Apple you had this kind of internet service backend and it was called .Mac and I think a lot of people feel that you haven't developed it much.
Jobs (very promptly): I couldn't agree with you more and we'll make up for lost time in the near future.

* AppleTV getting a 160G option

* Jobs talking in length on how successfull they were with making a client for Google Maps for the iPhone and how it was superior to anything else Google has made, and how a web-browser wasn't good enough to make web-applications really successfull. That a dedicated client would be better suited for the job.

So all of this makes me wonder if we'll be getting Google Apps + .Mac integration for the AppleTV. Adding keyboard/mouse support should be a fairly easy job, and that's really all it's missing.

So what are they waiting for? Well, if they really are making a dedicated client for network-applications then that might be a big part of Leopard that they haven't revealed yet, so we might have to wait till June for the full Leopard unveiling to take place before they tell us about this.

What do you all think?

You could very possibly be right. I never though of that. Expecially now that there are rumors going around that the Mini will be discontinued. And they've just increased the size the of hard drive on the AppleTV. I bet that thing has a lot of potential that Apple isn't bringing to point yet.

With their added weight on web apps today in the keynote (regarding the iPhone), I find this to become more and more believable.
