What happens when you select Settings>General>Software Update? Which iPad are you using (not just screen size)?

Did you have an iOS 11 beta profile installed?
You could also upgrade to 12.0.1 using iTunes.

Yes I forgot I had a beta profile installed.
I since removed it and 12 didn't upgrade.
Thanks for iTunes info -i3 laptop is since put away for a few hours until I purchase some blank blue rays.
Once I finish this afternoon's podcast listening, I'll re start ipad and try 12 beta, hopefuly I'll get 12.1 soon
