Installed in November and it completely destroyed my iMac (constant crashes, constantly said I was out of storage and refused to save files, even though I had 100GB free in DiskUtil etc). Downgraded.

Safe to upgrade yet?

you had a problem, that could have possibly been resolved; this community (for example) could have helped.

meanwhile, lots of people on this particular forum are running big sur as their OS, and doing just fine.

so... no one can tell you if it's 'safe' for you, since whatever issue you had could happen again. what imac? and did you try reinstalling? resetting the nvram, or the smc? or..?

iMac 2017, and yep did all those things. Same exact issues cropped up with Big Sur on my MacBook Pro 2017 (touchbar)

so, what's the common denominator? (since most big sur users don't seem to have this problem). apps you're running? did you migrate using a time machine backup?

did you do clean installs? or, at least, did you install the OS individually on each mac? (as opposed to, say, downloading the installer and using that download for both macs?

am just pointing out that these are not 'universal' issues. and again, no one here can tell you when the right time to install os 11 is... since we don't know in advance how your mac(s) will react, and don't know the details of your setup...

The only issue I've had so far was with Sophos AV where the 10.0.3 EAP loved to decimate my network connections.

Many apps took their sweet merry time redoing their software to remove KEXTs which made older versions of them unstable or unusable.

I've had one Kernal panic since I upgraded two months ago, I used to get about 1 or 2 a month previously (and said panic took place the first reboot after I installed the latest Fortigate client).

Saying nicely, probably not for you.
Big Sur is fine and many millions of people are running it perfectly fine daily. I have two Big Sur Minis and they are very stable without issues - using my setup and what I do. They both run 24/7 and none of the family users complain. I have challenges and annoyances, but marginal and invisible to family users...
Since Big Sur broke two of your Macs - and we are not talking about beta, I assume - your computer setup has something which is not compatible with Big Sur.
What? No idea.
Was that fixed? No idea unless someone can answer "what" question.
There is high likelihood that if you upgrade you will have the same issues as before. Chance it was fixed, but very good chance it was not. You may want to do inventory on what you consider "normal" setup and evaluate tools you have and use for Big Sur compatibility - and if that improved, try upgrading again. But expect issues.

maybe the thing to do (if you decide to try big sur again); install on one mac first.& don't rush to install apps (like sophos), go slow. see how things work.

if you're good, add in 3rd-party apps, one-at-a time, ie... sophos.

it is worth considering, since the OS is not hosed by default, that that app is the common denominator (also, make sure it's the most current version of the app).

good luck, whatever you do.

I'm sick and tired of the constant crashes. Just had to force a shutdown and restart just a minute ago. This has been ongoing. This is on a 2020 iMac. This latest, I was only running Outlook and Brave. That's it. And it's typical of the programs I've been running when it crashes. This machine runs far better in Windows 10. I'm fairly certain this will be my last Mac and I've only had Macs since 1989. I've had enough.

This is frustration venting. Over years I had similar feelings about my Macs, Windows, Android, ... Unluckily, it is also the least useful expression at the end.
2020 iMacs do not constantly crash, they actually should not crash at all. And this one may be still under warranty. Either system is borked - which can be fixed in macOS easier than in Windows, or user uses some "creative" software (Sophos anyone?), or system developed hardware fault (I had similar issues when my SSD had issues). No idea what is it, but this is not normal and it is difficult to blame Apple for everything unless we know what caused it. Do not get me wrong, there is lots of good problems to blame Apple for, but they cannot be responsible for everything.
There are whole step-by-step guides what to do. But, in this case use Apple warranty - call Apple, take it to Apple store, let them fix it or replace it. You paid for warranty, use it. Let them figure it out for you.

you have a problem, and should get help with it. whining fixes nothing.

start a thread, post details (which imac, processor, ram; which version of big sur); info about when the problem started etc. in fact, if it's 2020 imac... call apple. you've got applecare, put it to use.

i get that you're frustrated, but i would think that getting the issue resolved would feel a lot better than just complaining about it.

Yes kids, I'll contact Apple as I do have Applecare for the next couple of years. Thanks. Because that's pretty much sums up the responses. Oh, and "never had a problem" is always the most useless response.

And here's some other little tips for you:

Yes, sometimes people just like to vent. Happens often on forums. It's human nature. If your first reaction is to parent that person, you really need to interact with people more in the real world. My little tantrum really required no response at all.

Taking a condescending tone in your response is not the least bit helpful, but it probably makes you feel superior. So while it's always a positive to feel good about yourself, try and minimize it at the expense of others.

Finally, my response was not directed at anyone here and yet I receive responses that pretty much add up to personal attacks. If that's your reflex, then maybe you little keyboard warriors should check for fanboy delirium.

Yes, my skin comfortably thick. There are just days when I don't feel like sitting back and giving stupid a pass.

Feel free to fire back now. I won't be following this thread at all.

Try clean install and avoid installing ‘utility’ kind of 3rd party tools including antivirus, memory/disk optimization, firewall, etc. At least for first 1-2 weeks. This will minimize issues.

I'm using Big Sur and I am mostly OK with it. A few minor issues here and there, and only one killer for me to far.

I run a 2019 Mac Pro with 1.5 TB of RAM (that's not a typo) and for the life of me, I cannot get Box Drive to work. It is a very important tool in my university (I am a faculty member), and I have not been able to resolve this. I posted about it here, but that other thread seems to have come to a stand-still. Please forgive me for cross-posting, but it seems that many Big Sur users (even with Intel chips like me) are unable to get Box Drive working. It is a kernel extension issue, and there is not (yet) a resolution from Box for this.

did you read all the responses? there's some helpful observations (about sophos, for example), and in my post #9, i made some suggestions. contacting apple would also qualify as a suggestion.

"Taking a condescending tone in your response is not the least bit helpful, but it probably makes you feel superior." this could also sum up your own last post...

You were condescending first...when he gets pissed off with your tone and retorts, you then have the audacity to call him condescending! From what I've seen in these forums, you've been an incredibly narcissistic individual who has spent his entire time provoking people; only to proclaim some moral high ground when they get pissed off with you. Go away!

you're doing exactly what you accuse me of doing.

look thru my posts... over years. i've helped a lot, whenever i can; i've sometimes asked for help. and i've presented my point-of-view, just as others do repeatedly... repeatedly.

i don't understand whining over discussion, or ranting over asking for help. so i react to that... but still try to help.

what help have you provided in this thread? hmmm....

I cannot comment with regards to your particular system and/or configuration, but Big Sur is eminently usable and has been quite stable on the Intel-based systems I've updated.

M1's, however, continue to be an issue, even the latest Big Sur update. From the restart problems with HID devices that register an Accessibility entry (it takes two attempts to restart or startup from cold boot), to random launch crashes in Rosetta 2 (I suspect it's a RAM limitation issue, as it appears when launching memory-hungry Intel applications).

In addition, I know this is blasphemy but would it kill Apple to enable an option for the NSMenu object to appear as part of an application's main window? Yes, it's Windows-like, but a lot of us are used to it and find that it helps with application-focus usability.

I think your overly ‘parental’ tone is too much. Guidance of how to fix a problem is greatly appreciated, but you often come across as overbearing. Maybe you are trying to be too helpful, I dunno. But I’ve seen plently of you in the ‘Big Sur is ugly’ thread, and you have to admit that your posts garner a lot of unwanted attention!

(Thus, I know its not just me)

'unwanted attention'? you mean, a contrary point-of-view should be getting 'wanted attention'? 🤔

i hear you, that you think i have a 'parental' tone, and that it's 'too much'. i disagree (of course), and value my right to have a sometimes-opposing opinion.

so, what does this have to do with this thread? i've at least tried to help. you're just being antagonistic, condescending. do you get that? you're just like me.

seriously, if you have something to say to me, send a PM; don't waste time on someone's thread sharing your personal feelings...
