As long as I can remember, "Ctrl + Cmd + Power" is always the way to restart your laptop when everything freezes. But last night I had to hold the power button for 5 seconds for the computer to power off, which I don't think is the best way while it is still playing music in the background. Does the combination work on yours?

Works just fine on my MacBook Pro Core Duo. You press it and it instantly reboots. Sometimes it doesn't work if the system is *really* locked up hard. But, it does work most of the time.

I never knew about this. Works just fine on my new Macbook Pro Santa Rosa and my original CoreDuo Macbook. Then again, as the previous person mentioned, its probably similar to control-alt-delete in the old days where it would just reboot your system, unless it's really stuck.
