I got a MBP 2010 model and El Capitan works great so far. For me, it feels more snappy then Yosemite. But I think you should really consider an upgrade. In my world, 8GB of ram is already on the slim side. If you don't have an SSD, this would be mandatory. The new hardware is faster because of this single reason. CPU and GPUs did not make such a substantial leap then the hard drive technology. My advice: Get a Samsung SSD and top off you Ram to 8 or 16GB.
Its a small invest for at least 2 or even 3 more years usage.

I have a 2010 MBP, but I upgraded to 8GB RAM and an SSD years ago. El Capitan feels smoother than Yosemite to far.

Same notebook here (but I have 8 Gb of RAM), and I skipped Yosemite.
Going from Maverick to EL Capitan was flawless and great.

I've just run it on parents MBA and it crashed the machine, machine started looping and I've restored via time machine. It's now trying to restart the download and is saying 4hours (strange it only took 15mins on the MBP).

I've got it on one of my 3 MBPs, not feeling it right now. I'm struggling to see anything worthy of note.(but early days!)

If you can run Yosemite.. you can run El Capitan... I guess El Capitan is like the Snow Leopard from Leopard and Mountain Lion from Lion
