Hi,

The internal SSD on my mid-2017 MacBook Pro (without Touch Bar) failed and can't be repaired. I've replaced it with an external Samsung T7 2TB drive and everything seems to be running fine, and sufficiently fast for my needs. I'd like to keep this computer for a while longer since there are no other issues with it.

It is feasible to keep operating the mac in this manner indefinitely? Or will doing so just lead to problems down the road?

Thanks,

David

First, your 13" MBP 2017 non-TB SSD can be replaced. It takes like 10 min.

Second, you can boot off the T7 until you get tired of having it hanging off your laptop. However, I will caution you. If the T7 gets disconnected while "live", there is high risk of damaging the file system and losing both macOS install and your data, rendering your system unable to boot at all. Back up frequently because it will happen.

Thanks, Bigwaff. I had guessed that replacing the internal SSD would be expensive, but I'll explore that. And thanks for the tip about the damage risk!

Wanted to take a minute to thank you again, Bigwaff. I bought an OWC SSD and was able to install it, with some difficulty (microscopic screws and I don't get along). Very happy!
