I’m getting back into amateur video editing after a ten-year hiatus. I just installed the new final cut pro demo version and imported a freely distributed 30-second or so 4K video to familiarize myself with the UI.

Final Cut cannot play this video without stuttering and dropping frames and displaying the dropped frames message. Playing it in the preview window or on the timeline has the same stuttering. When previewing this video in the Finder it plays back perfectly smoothly.

The computer I’m trying this on is a brand new 7,1 Mac Pro with 32 gigs of RAM and 12 cores.

Is Final Cut really this horrible that it cannot playback this single 4K stream without stuttering?

This is the video clip I’m using:

Wonder if it has something to do with the encoding:

Final Cut doesn't support MPEG-4 Visual with b-frames. You should try with a H.264 or HEVC or MPEG-2 or ProRes video.

Good to know. If I let Final Cut optimize this segment on import would the encoding be fixed automatically or would I need to reencode it manually somehow.

No, because Apple's MPEG-4 Visual decoder doesn't support b-frames. You would need to reencode it with another app.
The good news is that no one actually uses MPEG-4 Visual, since 2005 or earlier.
