Hi, I am just wondering if anyone has been able to probe into the source code of the internet blocking software, freedom.to, to verify that it is safe to use and not a cover for a privacy snooping scam? They say on the website they use a local proxy and nothing is sent to servers hosted by freedom.to. Has anyone been able to confirm that this is all that the software does? Is there a way to verify it?

FYI I installed the software on my Macbook Air, then uninstalled it out of belated concerns that it might be a sophisticated snooping scam. I hope the installation (however brief) didn't compromise the MacBook Air!

They do not publish their source code, so it's not just as easy to check what it is doing.
You can achieve more or less same effect with some open source and $20 of hardware (pihole), you can customize something that is a bit more transparent (like AdGuard, which isn't perfect but gets the job done). Or you can run Freedom in conjunction with free trial of LittleSnitch to check whether Freedom calls home too much.
