It seems almost everyone here is familiar with the Grain issue on new MBP screens. Anyone have any luck with this being taken care of thru warranty, with the replacement screen being graini-less? I just got a replacement laptop, just considering my options

What's strange is this issue is a lot more noticeable that the Powerbook HD screens with horizontal lines. We need more media coverage people!

I don't understand how anybody could have had this "problem" corrected. As far as I can tell, every panel used in the MBP has been more or less identified and at least somebody has reported grain. I suspect they all have this grain and that anybody who says theirs doesn't either: 1) has inferior eyesight, or 2) doesn't know what to look for.
haha check out iWoots sig( a couple posts up). He seems to have devoted a decent amount of time to just that.
It's never bothered me and in fact, I never really realized it was there until I read about it on this board. I thought about it for a few minutes once I discovered it on my own MBP and then found something else to do.
Now if we can only convince iW00t to quit commenting about it in every single post and to think about something else for once...

I have the same exact computer as you except a smaller HDD. I NEVER notice while I am using it. I think you are paying too much attention to the grain.
Well, I should say that my MBP CD has the 9C56 display which apparently (from the few posts I've come across) is considered to be the "best".
But meh to the anonymous guy. I'll concede it isn't he best LCD panel in the world, but it's certainly a step up from my 12" PB. Plus, mine is a refurb, so I didn't pay nearly as much as some.
I guess it is because you don't work in Textmate all day.

My machine went back a while ago for servicing and I'm now on a spare Macbook for the time being, so much better!
Seriously, if the MBP has a screen that is as clean as the MB's, coupled with its size and power, it will be such a joy to work with.
Since we now know that the 9C57 is by Chimei, and 9C60 is from AUO, it seems like by elimination the 9C56 would be from Samsung. But just to be sure mind running Astra32 on it and tell us what model the 9C56 is?

Damn it. I was going to install XP for the first time on my MBP but the XP CD I have isn't SP2. I was going to slipstream an SP2 disk but it seems this isn't always possible with an OEM version, which is all I've got. I get an error during the update process.

I got the info off my 9C56. Had to reactivate Windows on the Bootcamp due to Parallels, but I got the 411.

I have not noticed any issues, and today is the first I've read about this grain issue. Glad to see I have one of the best screens.
Now only if Apple would fix the wearing off of the coatings on the lid button and my keyboard.
Does anybody have bootcamp installed on their 17"? If so, who is the vendor of the 09C62 display? I tried checking in Parallels but because it's in emulation, it won't tell me the vendor. Any way around that limitation?

9C61 and 9C62
I have compared and tested both the 9C61 and 9C62 screens on the 17 in MBP models.
First off, has anyone found out who makes the 9C62 panel?
The 9C61 is indeed made by Samsung. See posts 71 and 75 from here:

Having used both, I can say that the 9C61 screen is far superior to the 9C62.
My first MBP had the 9C61 screen. Unfortunately it was installed poorly and had severe vignetting in the corners and a couple dead pixels. Tests revealed some banding and a little bit of unevenness in backlighting, particularly along the bottom strip which had a slight glow to it.
Compared to the 9C62 however, the colors are quite deep and rich, and the text is very crisp. If I hadn't got a bad panel, I would have been satisfied with this screen, even with the slow 25 ms response time and the support for 6-bit color (262144 colors). There was no graininess to speak of (with dithering on).
I returned it and the replacement model came with a 9C62 screen, which unfortunately is worse. It is brighter than the 9C61, but the contrast ratio is horrible. Blacks looks almost gray on this screen. Colors are relatively washed out and the text is not as crisp and the other panel. Worse, the banding is so bad with certain colors it's unbearable. Gradients are generally not as smooth as on the 9C61 (which itself isn't a star, but passable).
But the worst part is the backlight leaking. This screen leaks considerably. The 9C61 is very clear and black around the edges (on a black test screen), while the 9C62 leaks a lot of light and you can actually see the lights if you peek into the edges of the screen against the frame.
Unfortunately I don't know yet who makes the 9C62 screen, so I don't have specs to compare with the Samsung.
But I can say for sure that once you've seen the two side by side, there is absolutely no doubt that the 9C61 is much much better, with purer, richer colors, much better contrast, and crisper text. The panel itself feels stronger (more like glass rather than plastic, to give some idea of what I mean). The 9C62 feels flimsier.
For those looking to buy a C2D 17 inch MBP, I would personally only get one with a 9C61 screen (Samsung) that has been properly installed (i.e. no or little vignetting or other dark splotches and no dead pixels).
It may be difficult to do this but if you are in an Apple store you may have some luck persuading them to help you find a good one. Otherwise, if you care about what you look at, I'd wait until something better comes out!

I'm new here, so don't jump all over me for this, but if I'm going to drop $2500+ of my hard earned dollars on a notebook (I plan to pick up the 15" MBP when Leopard arrives), I want it to be as close to perfect as possible. Hopefully this issue will be resolved by that time.
