Just read this over at the Apple official forum:

"The belief that iMacs use mobile chips is completely dumbfounded. All the intel iMacs at least use desktop variants, hence the close performance between the iMac's 8800GS and the Mac Pro's 8800GT (The iMac actually has the same card as the Mac Pro, just underclocked to GS frequencies, hence the 512MB config, the GS coming in 384 and 640MB configs). Also, there is no 8800M GS available." (thread here)

Can someone shed some light on this? Could my Nvidia 8800GS really be a underclocked 8800 GT? :eek:

Here´s the specs for the 8800 GS:
Core Clock (MHz) 550 MHz
Shader Clock (MHz) 1375 MHz
Memory Clock (MHz) 800 MHz
Memory Amount 384MB

Since we know for sure that we don´t have the official 8800 GS (because of the 512MB mem and 256 bit memory interface in the iMacs "8800GS"), I guess it´s only logical that this is an underclocked version of the GT or the GTS.

Either way, this would mean that it´s a perfect candidate for overclocking, only that so far it seems no one has managed to (even with drivers from laptopvideo2go, specificially these: 169.12).

As somebody said on another forum there was very little difference in graphical performance between the iMac and the Mac Pro, after updating the iMac with drivers from Laptopvideo2go. But isn´t it necessary to flash the firmware or softmod it in order to up the memory speed? Or is it enough just to install different drivers in order to get higher clocking speeds? And if the only solution is to flash the firmware, does anyone know if doing this would create a problem with the Leopard system? :confused:
 
It might be under-clocked for a reason. The iMac is quite the achievement when it comes to heat-management in confined spaces. I would suggest that if it indeed is a under-clocked GTS, it is probably so because the aluminum would start to melt and the screen blacken at a higher clock frequency.

Pure speculation on my part though.

We´ll see soon.. I just overclocked this thing (in Bootcamp Vista) to full standard for the GTS. Forget all I said about Rivatuner not working. Works like a charm for o/c :)

Any major issues? How does it compare with 8800gt? Have you had a chance to run any benchmarks with O/C vs non o/c? I can't wait to get my iMac 24" 2.9GHz w/ 8800gs and run some 3DMark tests.

I haven´t done any benching. But I´d say that COD4 was a lot smoother o/c. Crysis was no better though, so now I ramped it up to the max in Rivatuner and we´ll see. I´ll report back. Cool if you post some benches from 3Dmark!

According to system profiler, the device id is 0x0609

According to Nvidia, that device id is assigned to the 8800 GTS, so it seems the card is the 8800 GTS

That´s great news! Guess the "8800GS" really is bang for the buck. Now we only need to figure out how to o/c this thing :cool:

GeForce 8800M GTS

That is the mobile variant of the 8800GTS. That is what the "M" indicates. The desktop GeForce 8800 GTS has the part number 0x0193.

Anyone using common sense can understand that there will never be desktop GPUs used in an iMac. The enclosure is obviously far too compact for the cooling that would be necessary.

If you had searched you would have found out that the Apple branded Geforce 8800 GS is in fact a Geforce 8800M GTS with 64 Stream Processing Units.

Update: Seems I got ninja'd ;)

Managed to o/c, but it caps at 500/800. This is stable, using ATI-tool in Bootcamp-Vista. Even though it´s a 8800M GTS it should be able to go higher. It probably needs some other drivers, or a way for Vista to recognize it as the m-GTS.

Could somebody try with the drivers from LaptopVideo2go and see if it is possible to get a higher setting with ATI-tool?
