I’m using the latest version of High Sierra but recently had trouble importing thousands of pictures into Photos. Several false starts and thumbnails with no image.

Afterwards I realized that Image Capture could have been another option and seems to launch very quickly. Any pros or cons to importing iPhone pics into Photos istead of having Photos do the import?

I've never used iPhotos or Photos, and it's never been 1000's, but I've always transferred pictures from my iPads to MacBook using Image Capture. All of the pictures show up and then I can just drag and drop them to a folder. It's never failed from iOS4 through 10 and Tiger through Sierra. I even grab things from point and shoot cameras. I usually never delete files off of the iPads using Image Capture, though, but you can. I'm just chicken. :) I also don't have it set up to do anything automatically. Same reason.

I've been using Image Capture for years. Never had a problem. I don't use Photos, so I don't know what the workflow would be like for that, but two thumbs up for Image Capture.
