I have a news app that sends out plenty of notifications throughout the day which I read at night or the next morning. Well, with iOS 11, I've been noticing how they have cleared on their own - meaning I keep on missing them. It's happened a few times. Is this a normal iOS 11 "feature" or a bug?

Some apps automatically clear notifications if you respond on another device (e.g. GMail sends you notifications for new mail but if you read the new emails on another device, these notifications are automatically cleared). But if you haven’t been doing that, then it’s a glitch.

I’m actually having the opposite problem - if I get a notification and open the app directly instead of tapping the notification, the old notifications remain persistent in Notification Center and need to be manually dismissed.

The post above me is correct. Some notifications are meant to disappear completely if they are viewed elsewhere - this is something any app that issues notifications can do.

The other thing you might check is related to a new aspect of the way notifications are structured in iOS 11. At any time, if you look at the notifications on the lock screen, the ones immediately visible are those that have been delivered since the last time you unlocked the device. After you unlock and go back to the lock screen those will be relegated offscreen to the "Earlier Today" section, which you can access by swiping up on the lock screen. In the notification panel you see when the phone is unlocked and you swipe down these "Recents" are always immediately visible and the "Earlier Today" section is contiguous, rather than having to be swiped onto the screen.

Does that make sense? What I'm really saying is swipe up on the lock screen and see if your missing notifications are there. If not, they're probably being cleared as @Nekomichi described they sometimes work.

Thanks for the replies. I do know about notifications being cleared when opened on other devices. However, this is strictly an iOS app.

Feenecian and jhuynh - I know what you are referring to. Unfortunately, these are gone from there as well. They are nowhere to be found. It mostly happens after I open the app... so it might be an app issue.

I seem to be getting this issue with Messages. if I get a text overnight while I'm sleeping, usually when I check my phone first thing, it's in my notification history on my lock screen. Now nothing shows up, though my Messages App has the badge number to indicate I have a new message. I don't understand what's causing this new behavior and if it's a bug or some stupid "feature" that I have to fix in settings somewhere.

iOS 11's notification system absolutely sucks. Badly organised, unclear, and unless you just know from reading iOS reviews etc or found it accidentally, there's no way you could intuitively know that swiping down on the lock screen could magically reveal your older notifications
