I'm a graphic designer in Ireland. Getting iPad if it's ever released here. My question is to anyone working in a similar area to myself. What additional benefits in your work, has the iPad given you. I'm thinking of putting portfolios on it using keynote for demonstrations with clients. Also hoping to have an app available at some stage that would provide basic vector editing of illy and photoshop files. The ability to use iPad as a second screen for storing palettes also looks good. Curious also how well that works

No. The iPad is of no use to anyone trying to do any work. It's good for dicking around and taking notes.
I use mine as a second screen for Cinema 4D and Photoshop It works so long what you are viewing has a lot of motion. One drawback is that you cannot double click using AirDisplay, the program I use for this. So, for example, if I'm using the content browser and want to open a folder, I must use the curser to open the folder. I cannot use touch, or at least I've not figured out how yet.

As a Graphic designer you can utilize the ipad as
- a brainstorming device for ideas, layouts, quick blocking, color schemes etc.
- like you said, as a portfolio device.
- there are quite a few apps to create quick mockups
- as a second display
- for research and as an reference tool.
Above all its a handy tool for gathering new ideas almost everywhere on the go!!!

That's what I sort of thought.
Actually works out inexpensive considering I can offset the cost against company taxes and also claim the vat back.
Also have three daughters who will get serious use out of it
I'm a multimedia producer using it to display my work at any given time. It's a great presentation aid, as more people can see the screen at once vs. sharing it on a phone for one person at a time.
Oddly enough, for the inventive, you can use it for a good bit of professional stuff. Though I think it does need more apps specifically-geared for graphic design. At the moment, it seems the Photographers and drawing artists have their plethora of tools covered (and more to come, with more features), so for now, I guess somewhere between those apps can be used for demos.
I definitely have been using the iPad to improve my workflow.

Adobe Ideas - for doing quick sketches of those brainstormed ideas.
Popplet - for creating mind maps to share and collaborate with others. (let me know if you need to get into the bet I'll gladly invite you.)

Those are the ones I probably use daily.

Using and iPad to brainstorm.... urgh... I love mine but I couldn't ever imagine doing that.
I bought one for personal use and to help out on the work side.
Makes a very nice, very portable portfolio viewer. Only problem being the screen do suffer from uneven lighting and the colours aren't calibrated properly so some things can look wrong but for on the fly... "hey look at this", it's brilliant.
Haven't got round to trying to us it in presentations but there's obviously a lot of scope there.
Outside of those it's a nice way to show potential clients your website and there's always the possibility of creating an app to really show your work off.
Ultimately though I strongly believe that this type of form factor will take over from print in 5-10 years time. Getting to grips with the way content works on a touch interface and the possibilities with digital media isn't a bad place to go.

I use the app "KeyPad for Photoshop" to speed up my work in Photoshop.

If your graphic design is specifically for iOS apps, or will be any time in the future, then the device has dozens of real-world, practical, work-related uses above and beyond what has already been discussed here.
Myself, I will save any iOS images I am working on into a Dropbox folder and then view/show those images on my iPad (or iPhone/iPod Touch).
There is not a better portable display in the world today that is larger than 4 inches than the iPad.

Best portfolio ever, save loads of your work so people can view them in goodreader etc...
Access to web on the go to show websites you've worked on to potential clients.
If you illustrate like I do things like brushes, layers pro and sketchbook pro are excellent.
You can manage your ongoing projects in Bento or Things.
Use Air Display as a second or third screen to your main mac.
Sure it has not replaced my Mac Pro Octo and Cintiq 21UX as my main work tools, but it has replaced my laptop which I sold not too long ago on adverts.
The iPad is only as much use to you, as you are willing to make it.

also, adobe ideas is fun to fart around with and then email the pdfs to yourself to open in illustrator -- besides that, i wish there was a wireframe app (w/ a nice / clean UI)...
