I'm looking to buy my first tablet, and I want it to be a 4:3 aspect ratio because most of my use will be reading PDFs, books, articles, studying, etc, and I believe the 4:3 ratio is much better for this. 16:10 or 16:9 just feels too "tall" and wrong when used in portrait mode. In my opinion, 16:9 is only good for watching videos, which is one of the few things I don't intend to do on my tablet.

I would kind of prefer an Android tablet because of the ease of transfering files (just connect to the USB port and drag & drop files), which is a hassle on iOS.

However, I can't find any good Android tablets that are 4:3. All of them seem to be 16:10 or 16:9, and specifically designed to be used in landscape mode. Same for Windows 8.

Because of this, I'll probably end up getting the new iPad, but I was wondering if anyone knows any good alternatives?

Pretty much yeah.

There's an Acer 4:3 tablet and another HP one coming out soon with Tegra 4 and high resolution screen.

Pantech Element is 4:3. I am not sure it is even available any longer and unsure it is as good as even the iPad Mini.

Afraid so.

The world is moving on from 4:3, sadly enough for the people who love it. I wonder if even the iPad will have it forever. Does the 5S have a 4:3?

Apple never made a 4:3 to begin with.

Starting with the iPhone 5 it is 16:9. Prior it was 3:2.

And Apple would have to be insane to dump 4:3 on the iPad. 16:9 is a big part of why android tablets suck. It's just wrong ergonomics and design for tablet computing.

A better example of why 16:9 sucks for tablets...Microsoft Surface. Try it. It's horrible as a tablet and not because of the software. Now matter how you hold it, it feels like a 2x4 in the hands.

Amazingly enough, I can use my Surface RT as a tablet quite easily. I can even read some things in portrait while holding it in my hands.

Guess I must be magical.

One of my main gripes with Android tablets is the aspect ratio. The OS is fine but for anything outside of Video playback and maybe some games the aspect ration is useless.
