I will be buying a iPhone 12 mini soon. It will probably be running iOS 14.2 or 14.2.1 since 14.3 was released only a few days ago.

My question is, would updating it to 14.3 via DFU mode on Mac be of any advantage versus updating it over WiFi on the iPhone itself?

I thought updating the phone via DFU would load a completely fresh iOS including the iBoot loader, and that might be a better thing to do.

I would appreciate any thoughts and opinions on this from forum members who are knowledgeable about these matters.

Thanks in advance.

Updating over the air is fine. Using DFU or Recovery Mode is only necessary when your phone has a problem.
True. DFU or Recovery Mode is normally to be used only to fix problems with the phone. But I do wonder if installing a completely fresh OS via DFU would be of any benefit compared to an over-the-air update which would merely update the existing OS.

I am posting this here since it may benefit some forum members. I posted this same question on the Apple Discussions Forum and an expert there informs that restoring/updating the phone via DFU mode has benefited a few users. Restoring/updating via DFU mode installs the latest Baseband firmware, and few users have reported that it cured the intermittent cellular voice problems they were experiencing.

Caution: Please do the DFU update only if you are confident enough to do it.

If the phone hasn’t been experiencing any problems, there is no real point in doing a fresh install. if we were talking about Betas, the point would have some merit for many people.

When i am trouble shooting a problem, Recovery Mode is the last step taken. In some cases, it can solve software install glitches or app / user settings problems.

That is true, if one was just restoring with the same iOS version. But since updating to iOS 14.3 via DFU loads the latest Bootloader which seems to have cured voices issues for some users, it would be a good thing to do, since there is no downside to a DFU update other than the extra trouble doing it involves.

If want to do it, go for it. Will it actually offer any benefits or play much of a difference in a situation like yours? Not likely.

I am planning to do that since it is always good to have the latest firmware, especially the important bootloader.

Thanks for your inputs.
