Is it as fun as I remember?

Hehe, I grew up doing web design during my pre-teen/early teen years and then in 2005 early on I decided to stop. Now that it is 2007 I want to get back to doing design and such on a personal basis. But, all the teen/young adult (13-25) boards I used to hang out on for webdesigners and such are like dead almost. Not DEAD but people really don't post like they used to and there isn't as much activity. It used to be that you would get like 100 comments on your blog from your friends on a board or whatever and now it is so dry.

Anyways, is this as fun and hard as I remember? I haven't designed a layout since 2004 and I lost all my old ones. I finally got my domain name back that I lost in Jan 2004 and so I can blog again(This was a VERY unique name)!

Anyways, what programs work best? I keep trying different OS X FTP programs but they're all so slow X_X.
 
I guess it depends on how you define fun. :p Personally, I enjoy web design, although I do it infrequently.

Also, Transmit (you can find it at versiontracker.com) is a very nice FTP program for Mac OSX.
 
Designing layouts in Photoshop is always fun. It's when I have to build the actual site does it become 'not fun'. You see, I've never taken the time to learn HTML authoring apps like Dreamweaver but have always hand-coded my sites from scratch using BBEdit.

It's always a pain when browser compatibilities with IE rears its ugly head.

So to answer your question, no... web design is no longer as fun as it once was. So much of it is now on the programming back-end, and I'm no programmer. Stuff like that hurts my head.

Everything she said... except i use Dreamweaver. Maybe i'll use this year to learn programming... I'm just waiting on 10.5 & a new Black Macbook.
 
CSS-based layouts has made web design more fun than it has ever been in the past. I hated building table-based sites. I liked the outcome, but I just hated building them. Ever since I learned to build css-based layouts, I just love hand coding and building sites. And textmate makes it even more fun with the powerful snippets and keyboard shortcuts. Sometimes I think I actually enjoy the markup process more than the design process. :eek: I think it's because it's less stressful. It's like playing the piano.
 
It can be both frustrating and satisfying. I hate fixing my stylesheets to work around the flaws of IE, but it's great to see the final outcome.
 
Gee I'm still hand coding all the sites I design. I haven't even considered Dreamweaver, but would like to get to know it if it truly does make life easier. From what little I've seen of it, I'm not that convinced.

Yeah it's a challenge and I do enjoy it.
 
i hand code my sites 100%....even with all the IE workarounds and compatability issues, i still find it very fun.

well, maybe not "fun", per se, but satisfying. :)

i don't like dreamweaver...it tends to throw in extra code here and there, and i feel like it's a crutch for too many people. that's just my humble opinion, however.

I use a program called Fetch for FTP, it has never failed me. It is shareware, but well worth the price- wich includes free upgrades for life.
 
If you are doing all your coding work by hand, I recommend Cyberduck and subEthaEdit. Great combo if you are working on your "live" documents on the server... backup files are for girls. :eek: ;)
