Is it best to go through the setup they offer at the store with your new iPad?

That way you can see if you have any dead pixels or problems and they can take care of you right there on the spot.

There are bound to be some defects on some iPads at some stores, right?

If you've never used an iPhone or iPod Touch, or want help setting up your email, then it's a good idea. Other than that, I can't think of a good reason to. I've never heard of an iPhone or iPod Touch shipping with dead pixels.

Unfortunately, many have. I'd check for dust or metal under your screen, too (both of which happened three times to me on the iPhone 3GS, and I kept the third with one speck of dust).

Well if you're paranoid about dead pixels or dust, sure.

But I wouldn't - I just hate others opening the box for me. Plus if less people use the help services, the faster the line will go!

Even if the store "sells out", they will have a few spares of each size on-hand for any problem pieces of hardware. This may just be swapped with another retail boxed one, or they may have the replacements on-hand already. Frankly, I wouldn't worry about it and just open it yourself.
