Hello, when I bought the IPP 12.9 2017 WiFi version, the Apple employee "highly recommended" me to buy Apple Care. Is it actually better to buy it?

Apple Care is an extended warrantee which gives you 3yrs of coverage. If you want it, buy it. Its a good deal. Its like $0.13 per day.

My personal rule of thumb is that if the device I am purchasing (iPhone, iPad, an Apple notebook) is going to be something which I will be carrying around and using not only at home but outside my home, and will be accompanying me not just around town but also on trips significantly away from home, the cost of AppleCare Plus is built into my purchase planning. It just provides peace of mind, and for me that is worth it.

Total 2 years from date of purchase. Not 3 years.

Must buy though.

It depends. How prone are you to dropping/damaging your devices?

With all of the Apple products that I've purchased over the past 12 years (a dozen macbooks/Pro/Air, 2 iMacs, 8 iPads, 5 iPod Touches, 4 iPod Nanos, 6 iPhones, 2 Apple TVs), I never bought AppleCare. In all that time, I never had a need where I could use it. I've saved a TON of money by not buying AppleCare.

But having said that, you need to do what makes you feel secure.

Usually I am very careful. For tablets and phones, always have the protective case and glass screen protector. Being that, usually I drop my phone about 3 times/year. I only dropped by Samsung 12.2" tablet once by accident. The protector felt off and the tablet was bent.

The Apple guy said that dropping is not protected under warranty and if an accident happen to my device, it would cost about $700? so $100 worth of Apple Care is a good investment.

Apple will have a generic service price somewhere on their website. A screen repair is probably rather expensive but on the other hand I never broke one either. Haven’t purchased Applecare ever and it worked out fine for me.

They don’t repair. They just give you a refurb one. In USA it is USD 599.

This is shi*ty. Is this common practice? If the screen is broken, they give you a refurb one?

That’s pretty common practice. Would you prefer to wait for multiple hours and then get the old device back, including potentially worn out screws or other components?

A refurbished device looks like a brand new device and will be in better shape than most of the customer devices it gets swapped against.

Apple had to replace my iPad’s battery. They said they don’t open iPads. They gave me refurb ones.

Wow! MS told me that if there is anything wrong with the Surface Book, they don't repair but they would just give me a new one.

If that is true (not saying it isn’t), the refurbishment would be new ones that got returned, checked out and still work fine, right? I.E., not repaired refurbished!

I would rather buy a brand new one.

I just bought Applecare+ for my iPad Pro 10.5. Mainly for peace of mind and since it's larger than what I'm used to (from iPad Mini), I don't have to worry too much about dropping it. First time getting AC too.

Also, it's good for resale value if I end up selling the 10.5 in the future.

When I bought my 10.5 pro, the Apple employee didn't even bother offering it. I have to ask for it. She said hardly anybody is getting Applecare for iPads so she doesn't usually recommend people to get one. However, I have had great experiences so far with Applecare on my other Apple devices. Considering how tightly these electronics are packed these days, I will always consider Applecare as part of the cost of the device. I just wish Apple extend the AC for iDevices to three years (just like on the Macs), at least for iPads.
