Have a single cpu Mac Pro 4,1 flashed to 5,1. Was using it today, and when I tried to start it, it turns on, fans spin, and LED goes on, then off, then the LED flashes once and the machine shuts down. Pulled HDD and DVD and tested it bare, same result. I had upgraded the chip to a six core, and have had no issues for almost a year. So...is it pining for the fjords, or is it fixable?

Is there a way to replace a mac power supply with a PC unit, or a conversion kit?

Not too expensive to fix but a lot of disassembly.

Replacing the PSU is a relatively easy job and can be done in ~15 min.
You'll have to:
-unplug the PSU
-remove all pci cards , drives in bay 3 and 4 and the optical drive sled
-remove the aluminium cover at the back of the optical bay (2 screws)
-unplug the PSU from the LogicBoard
-remove 4 hex screws in the bottom of the PSU ,located in HDD bay 4

its not the PS

it will be the backplane, prob.

That's why I was wondering if a PC PSU could fit.
If I buy a mac psu and it is the backplane, now I have a PSU I don't need. If I can adapt a PC PSU to a mac pro, that is a component I can recycle along with the case to build a PC/hackintosh.
