i go to college and have a lot of roommates. i was thinking how great this would be to connect to a tv and watch movies or plug into a stereo during parties. but i get worried about my laptop being in the living room and doing these things in case someone knocks it over or spills something on it. at first the ipad seem to be better suited for these roles but it's also smaller and harder to notice and lighter and easier to knock around. not to mention its a giant screen.

is it just me or does this thing seem accident prone?

Not really. Anything can be seen as accident prone, especially in a college setting. And I'm confident that Apple has taken into consideration the possibility of perhaps the screen being scratched up, as it is indeed a big screen. But just like they did with the iPod touch and the iPhone, the screen is likely to be very, very difficult to scratch. As far as spills messing it up, that can be said about any electronic device. It can most definitely be said about any tablet as well. The iPad is hardly any more accident prone than any other tablet that came before it.
Cool, maybe I'll buy one of those cables, since i assume it will work with my iPhone as well

my tv has vga. actually a lot of hdtv's do these days. i also have a macbook pro with a mini display port to vga adapter and most of my roomamtes have windows laptops with vga ports. so if the ipad wants to replace my laptop as my living room computer it needs to do this well too.
I've been wondering that too. Domestic environments are extremely "uncontrolled".
Imagine it gets buried under the sofa cushions and someone sits on it. Or, after reading in bed, you leave it under the covers and the kids come in and jump on it. Or it falls out of the car door when you open it because the kids were watching a video, but then drifted off to sleep and the iPad slid down between the seat and the door. I could go on and on.
It's a tough world out there and I can't wait to see what Apple's done to protect the device (other than minimizing the pain by reducing the price). Maybe we'll all buy iPad iNsurance through iTunes - along with our prepaid data?
You know, when you actually pay $500 out of your own pocket, you tend to be a little better at keeping track of it. If you put it in harms way through your own negligence thats no fault of apples.

Since Apple Care doesn't cover user induced breakage, your best bet would be insurance.

Gosh, i hope so too... I cracked my iPhone screen last week and had to pay $199.99 to have the screen and lcd replaced...

i agree. that is why i am thinking about these things 2 months before i actually have the device in my hands. the reason i made this thread was to discuss whether or not apple's design took into account that accidents will happen. no matter how careful you are, you will drop this one day. on apple's website they have the spec for the power cord and they include an extension but will it feature mag-safe like design? will a yank on the headphone jack send the ipad flying across the room or result in the wire being unplugged?

As for the thread, I have wondered about weight and how grippy the device is.
If it becomes heavy after several hours of use due to fatigue, or is slippery w/o a case, I expect to hear of many slip and falls.
Heck, all three: Straps, lanyard and skin. Gotta look after baby!
And the best protection of all is not to let anyone else but yourself use it. I would be slapping someone if they dropped it.
Id more worried about dropping it than scratching it! Just like the iTouch, this thing is very portable but not very durable. Who hasn't dropped their phone more than once, yet phones can take a fall, iPod Phones and Touches are a bit
