When ever I download a .zip file in 10.8.2 archive utility tries to open the file but ends up taking too long, I quit it and it crashes.

These are small 3mb files that shouldn't be taking so long to open.

Just wondering if anyone else is having the same problems?

And if you are, the way I cope with it, is just to open the .zip files with The Unarchiver.app

I've been having the same problem. I think I searched and found the solution here, delete the archive .plist file and run disk permission repair and reboot.

I've done this and still have the same issue on a particular zip which was not created by the archive utility. I think there could be some incompatibilities between zips created from different programs. I switched to using the iPack archive utility from the Mac App store.

I don't think so. I tested it in terminal by typing unzip filename and it worked, so it's the archive utility itself.
I guess in the mean time use another program like you said.

Same issue here, on both a Mac Mini 2012 and a rMbp. Takes a really really long time to unpack anything (even tiny files).

I'm having the same problem, I have to rely on Keka for everything, which isn't bad, just a bit annoying. Updating to 10.8.2 didn't seem to help. I'm on a Mid 2012 rMBP.
