I have a 7,1 which came with a Magic Mouse 2. I've not had a mouse before combines the functions of a trackpad with the usual mouse functions, so I've been trying to let it teach me how to use it.

Most of the functions such as right and left click, double click, previous screen (swipe left/right for the internet browser) and so on seem to work fine.

I have trouble making the screen scroll upward and downward. At first it seemed I could slide my finger back and forth at the front of the mouse and get the screen to scroll up and down just fine.

After some days of what seemed like proper response, the mouse no longer seems to respond to scrolling, except near the rear part of the mouse. It almost seems that the front surface of the mouse has lost its sensitivity. Sometimes if I slide my finger over the right front corner of the mouse it will scroll, but most often I have to move my hand toward the rear of the mouse, past the middle, before the scrolling is active on the screen.

Is this normal? Do I need to learn more about how to get the mouse to scroll effectively? Is the mouse possibly defective? Or is it my body's electrical field?

Thanks,

Tom

Chris,

Thanks.

Talked w/Apple (almost an hour!) and one is on the way. I will need to send in the old one after the new one gets here.

It will be interesting to see if the new one has the same behavior.

Oh well...

New mouse arrived. Different color underneath from the original, but sadly the behavior is the same. Original one is on the way back to Apple. Maybe they can come up with another idea after they see the original. Software problem?

Sigh...

I've had and managed quite a few magic mice both types (with replaceble batteries, or withthe lightning port on the bottom (one of the worst places it could have ended up) side. Solid thing overall and only ever had one that has gone flacky (kept on losing connection to the computer).
On my own MP7,1 the one that came with it: I almost decided it was bad at a point. Almost the same as what you describe: the scrolling wasn't working anymore as it should. Tried lots of things to fix it, andwas about to look for an old white one to get rid of the problem, when I turned the mouse off and on again: problem immediate solved and hasn't resurfaced since.
Since you have it also with a replacmeent mouse: might be something else. Still can't hurt to turn it off and on (switch is on the bottom) with the computer it's connected to on.

Chris,

I wondered about that. My 7,1 connects using ethernet, but the router is nearby (as in 3 feet away) and broadcasts on both frequencies. Would the symptoms be associated with wifi interference?

a chance your fingers are heavily callused? ;) ... anyway I have my original magic mouse 2 replaced (tracking issue) by talking with apple support and they sent me the same black/silver color scheme. They gave you a differently colored mouse ?

Nah if your machine doesn't use WiFi Bluetooth interference from 2.4GHz WiFi is not the cause of the issue. This only happens if those antennas are right next to each other.

Mike,

Yes, the replacement mouse is a dark color underneath where the original was silver. the top is black, same as before. Didn't change the symptoms - sensitivity for scrolling at the top, but none or almost none at the front.

No callouses of any consequence...

I did notice that the original mouse sometimes became catatonic (no pun intended) occasionally. So far the replacement has maintained its connection OK.

IndioX,

Interesting you should ask: our DECT base phone is about one foot away from the Mac's case. I will try moving it - is there a "safe" distance you'd recommend?

I moved the DECT to about 4 feet away. No change in the sensitivity for scrolling, but so far no catatonia.
